I'm trying to help a friend with her '95 Eclipse GS. It is randomally overheating. Sometimes it will go 100 miles without overheating.

The Thermostat, Radiator Pressure Cap, & Temp. Switch (below the T-stat) have been replaced. I have observed the t-stat opens, when the engine heats up.

I've heard that there are 2 temp. switches (Rad. Fan Hi & Rad. Fan Lo?). Which temp. switch is located below the t-stat? Where is the other temp. switch? I have seen both radiator fans cycle on & off. Sometimes one fan runs, sometimes both run.

The Temp. Sensor (that drives the guage) has NOT been replaced yet. At least I'm assuming that it's the temp. sensor. It below the t-stat, & has a couple of wires coming off of it. The temp. guage works normally.

I'd appreciate any help anybody can offer.

Thank You!!!!!!

well if the temp sensor hasnt been replaced that could be the problem. Has the water pump been changed?

The temp. SENSOR below the t-stat was replaced.

The temp. SWITCH below the t-stat was also replaced.

I have not replaced the 2nd. temp. switch, which is located by the passenger side cooling fan.

I replaced the thermostat. Which way does the t-stat spring go? The old t-stat had the spring facing the engine. I've put it in facing the engine & then facing the radiator. Spring facing the engine caused the temp. guage to sit exactly in the middle, but rise to 1/4" from hot when ideling. Spring facing the radiator caused the temp guage to sit steadily half way between center & cold.

The cooling system is not leaking & there is no water vapor in the exhaust.

Water pump has NOT been changed yet. The AutoZone price is about $45 for a new (rebuilt?) water pump.

Replacing the spark plugs made it run smoother. I'm not a big fan of the spark plugs being 6 inches inside the head (couldn't get the spark plug socket out!!!!!).

THANKS again for all your help. I can get around a big block Ford with my eyes closed, but I'm completely clueless when it comes to Japanese cars.

I had the same problem with my 95 GS. I needed a buncha stuff to actually fix the whole problem but part of the problem was the fact that my thermostats kept breaking and sometimes they'd break shut and sometimes they'd break open so check that also....

if your tried replacing all of the above, last thing you need to see is the head gaskets. That can also cause overheat.

Yes, both the HI & LOW fans cycle on & off.

I thought about head gaskets, but have no bubbles in the coolant, no water vapor in the exhaust, & no coolant in the oil pan. That's the only 3 places that coolant can go, with a bad HG.

Apparently having the T-stat spring facing the radiator works best, because the car is no longer overheating.

Thanks for all your help.
