ok so i got my car checked at autozone and they said it was most likely a loose gas cap....so i replaced the gas cap...unplugged battery for a while. the check engine light turned off. and about 24 hours later came back on. ideas? i have a feeling im gonna have to have a smoke test to diagnose it..

if you are asking why your check engine light came on, it's because your ECU found a problem

what the hell is a smoke test?

i said autozone checked it and said the code matched 'major gas leak' or whatever but they said thats usually a loose gas cap. but its not. which means its leaking somewhere else, and a smoke test is when they run smoke through to see where it is leaking.

hook a smoke machine up to one of the EVAP's vacc lines

pump smoke into it to find where its leaking.

Ah ok. well.. I have heard of that except, most people use an air compressor, rather than smoke. And Also, it is more commonly referred to as a Boost/vacuum leak test.

I have the same code. I actually have 2. Ones says small leak and another says large. I was told by a family mechanic it's most likely my exhaust system. Its supposed to be cracked a good bit. I have never actually seen the cracks but I can smell the exhaust if I am stopped for a while.

I call it a gafframus bindle sepratory inhibition valve location test. Just to sound smart. But another thing to do is to put baby powder or equivalent on a suspect leak and pressurise the system. The powder will blow off right where the leak is.

yea that is how I do it, except I use soapy water instead of powder. it bubles up around the leaks. Just mix soap and water in a spray bottle nad spray everything down. lol
