A word to the wise. Just because the belts LOOK ok, doesn't mean that they are. I actually asked that question in another thread (Timing belt Condition), and should have realized it was a stupid question, before asking it.
While you are checking the timing, I also recomend checking both pulleys and the water pump for bearing play, and the hydraulic tensioner, to make sure they are good (might as well do it, since you have it all apart) A failure of those components can spell disaster for a 420a engine, since it is an interferance motor.
Good luck. :)

Ok, let me just say this. There is absolutely NO reason you should EVER rev your motor to 8k unless you are on the track and you have LOADS of mods. The factory redline is like 7.5 somewhere areound there, so if you reved it to 8k, then you probably fucked something up.

or unless your in a RX7/RX8 ... Rotaries handle High RPM's like its nothing, you can hold it past redline for quite a bit

This isn't a good place for tips, it's the best place for tips. Some of us like to shake up the monotony of problem/sloution tho. You'll begin to associate personalities to the profile pictures pretty soon. And you'll be able to spot the a-holes. But in the meantime check your timing like I suggested. I'm 95% sure thats your problem. And if it is off i'd recommend replacing the belt, pulleys, and tensioner. Although you can prob. get away with just re-setting it for now. Either way, after the fix , don't drive it like an RX7.

I'm trying to say that there's a difference between constructive criticism and blatant criticism.

Check your compression. Even though 8k isnt possible on a stock 2g n/t car (rev limiter kicks in at 7400) you could have damaged your rings.

The compression might not be completely off but if its low the car might not want to start right away. Once the car is running it keeps itself running.

Just out of curiosity dude.........
You mentioned it takes a few times to start it, unless it is warmed up.
Does it do anything else funky, like a weird sort of idle thing when you take your foot off the gas, but like you said, only when it is cold?
You said you have built other cars, so you must have some good tools. Just out of curiosity, what's your fuel pressure at?
