After reading a lot of Jonbons posts for working on a custom Turbo 1.8 and searching air intakes/short rams, the question that I came into is what is MAF in concerns to a Short Ram? Is it a fitting/size for the manifold or a type of connector?

This is the one that I bought that is being shipped to me now:
MimoUSA Short Ram

Thanks guys. Total noob ^

MAF = Mass Airflow Sensor. Basically, it meters the air coming in to make sure it's adequate. With the 1.8L you have 2 choices... Well.. 3 really.

1) Buy a known brand and it should come with a filter housing ( I like Cosmo Racing's intakes. They are good quality and affordable)

2) You can buy a cheap intake kit on ebay (good luck they are rarely on there) and just use the factory aircan and throw in a K&N. You may also opt to cut the top off of the aircan. Will give it a little better flow.

3) Go to an exhaust shop that is capable of mandrel bending pipe, and ask them to make you a pipe and weld on a bung for the vacuum line. As for the filter, use the same method as step 2.

Also, another little trick that will let your car breathe a little better is to "hack" the MAF. Which basically means to remove the honeycomb in it. There is a tutorial on VFAQ for this and is really simple. Takes about 3 min.

Ahhh ok it's making sense now. So in that case with the MimoUSA that I ordered already has the filter housing/filter itself. The one I ordered came a little shorter than $70 after shipping.

mm.. i just checked out their site. The pic they have is representative, so It is hard to tell. Although they are an ebay ccompany so odds are you will be folowing step 2. But when it comes in it should have instrucctions on how to install it. It should say how to install the MAF int here. If no instructionss are provided, take a pic of it nad post it on here. Also, Dont throw away your air can yet! lol You might need it. And the MAF is attached to the Aircan's lid, so go ahead and remove that. I believe there is 8 screws holding it to the lid, but don't quote me on that.

Ok I'm pretty sure that makes sense to me. It's supposed to arrive here on Thursday so if no instructions are included I'll take a pic and throw it on.

Thanks!

So the intake finally arrived. I'm at work so i can't wait to get home

Is it a good idea to get some carburetor cleaner and clean out the carburetor after i take off the stock air intake? I'll prolly pick up a can on the way home if so.

you don't have a carburetor. but it can't hurt to clean the throttle body
