Yeah, these cars make some knocking noises from pads for some reason. You don't really hear it from the inside.
Change the pads because you need to anyway and see if that helps. If not, you might want to get a buddy to stand on the side of the road and you can drive by and stop in front of him a couple of times to get a better idea of what is sounds like.

it is not the best method. if he has a knocking rod and he starts over revving it......it could get bad very quickly and go from "rebuildable" to "replacement required"
