Just bought a '97 Eclipse Spyder and the aftermarket radio will stop producing sound, even though it has power and apears to be working. It finds stations when seeking, etc. Is there a self-resetting protector for the speakers? I have the sub under the passenger seat, but don't know if its being used. The "DIN" connector under in the console does not hook up to anything. The big plug on the back of the radio is "spliced" into the wiring harness. Do those wires go straight to the speakers, or through the amp? I bought a new radio - still does the same thing. I figure it can't be a fuse because it fixes itself every once in a while. HELP!!!

I would cutt all the "spliced" wires and then run all new ones to each of the speakers and amp. That way you dont have to worry about tracking down a single wire that may be shorting on something or broken...also then you will know it is done right and not have to worry about it later....its pretty easy to do..I did it to all 4 of mine plus the amp in about an hour

it does sound like a loose connection somewhere. you can either track it down and replace the connection, or completely rewire the speakers. which route is easier will depend on where the loose connection is and if its easy to get to.

Does it randomly lose sound? are there any wires on the harnes to the stero that aren't connected to anything?
this sounds kinda like what happened when i installed my system, it all worked fine but i left the "mute" wire lose back there. so everytime i'd hit a bump or turn the wire would touch the frame and my stereo would mute itself lol. and just like you i could change sources change station, even change the volume level lol. after a few days i figured it out and put some electrical tape around the end of the wire and now its fine.

Hey, thanks for all the great advice. Do you know if the "mute" wire kills all the speakers completely? Also, do all the speakers run through the separate amp, or are some (or all) of the wires direct to speaker. I guess I have no idea how the amp fits in.
Like you said, at this point its probably easier to pull some new wire.
