I have had a problem with my Pajero for some weeks when driving at 80kph (can happen also at lower speed also) and 1800-1900 rpm. It is very unusual and my local dealer has checked the wheel balance and diff on back wheels to no avail. The vibration is both heard and felt at this speed (approx) but does not occur at higher or lower rpm - I can avoid it my increasing speed or taking my foot off the accelerator. Unfortunately the dealer is not sure whether a new torque converter will solve the problem :-(

Any advice on the problem ?

My model is a 2003 Pajero 3.5 GLX Petrol

Its very hard to diagnose this. TQ Converter would not make noise just between this small rpm bracket. TQ Converters usually make a repetitious chatter noise with increasing load and gear change , in low rpm ranges. And sumtimes goes away and at times does not.

What is equally interesting is that the vibration only occurs in automatic mode and not manual.

Have yu serviced the transmission ? It may depend on the TQ load in a certain gear , if there is a slight pressure issue. As in a slightly restricted transmission filter or old fluid etc. When it is in manual mode the pressure solenoid sets up for higher , so generally a higher pressure flow will be going thru the TQ and drums. It can be many things causing this. Not really the TQ but can be pressure related to the transmission.

Hi

Just guessing here.

Could it be that your transmission/engine mounts are shot? Have you checked? Sometimes those shot rubber blocks give such major headache, but they are so easily solved.
