 Hi, i am new to the world of chariot ownership, i purchased a 1993 4wd 2l diesel auto to use for towing a boat which i have yet to do, i really only started driving it a few weeks ago and i was really shocked to see how much fuel this car uses, it was using almost 60 ltrs on 470 klm trip at below normal driving speeds, trying to get to 100 klms takes forever, don't get me wrong for some reason i really like this car and would like to keep it, if someone could please let me know what kind of mpg i should be getting as i can find very little info about it as it is an import. i also should say that i am finding it impossable to find parts for this car, i.e exhaust system, i have repaired the exhaust as best i could and have given the injectors a dose of cleaner and it is producing a little better mpg, i have also booked it in with my mechanic for a service, any free advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a regular 2.0td fwd space wagon and i get about 34mpg. Though if i have to drive with the foot to the floor that drops significantly, probably to about 27mpg. Around town it isn't great either. Lots of starts and stops seems to drink like a fish.

Yours is a 4wd which i'm sorry to say will use more juice as it is heavier at (about 1450kg) and also because more power is required to turn all four wheels. But the difference should only be about 2-3mpg. Just after doing a quick calculation and you seem to be getting only 22mpg.

Maybe you have a brake binding, probably one of the rear ones. Do any of the hubs feel hot after youv'e been driving for a while?

Maybe it's the air-filter. Do you get any black smoke from the exhaust?

Any unusual tire wear. If the wheel alignment is off that would affect mpg?

About the spare parts. You'll definatly have to hunt high and low in scrap yards, e-bay, buy and sell etc....

I know it's a bit strange but i kinda like my one too, even if the gearbox is about to fall out some day soon! :)

Best of luck.

Hold on I just notices the word auto up the top there. That would also cause less mpg. Probably another drop of 2-3mpg.

Thanks a million for taken the time to respond, it was a shock to the system to see just how much fuel this car burns, the car is booked in next week for a service so hopefully i can gain a few extra m.p.g, will see what the mechanic has to say about it, and thats exactly what i have been doing when it comes to the parts, searching the breakers and ebay, not a lot about for this model, i also noticed that it sometimes won't find drive until i drop it into second gear and then it drives fine, and it will not go into top gear until it reachs 102 kph at 3000 revs and then revs drop to 2600 and will cruise at that with ease, but with any speed below that and it's driving in fourth for most of the journey.

Thanks again,

Keith

So what's the verdict? Will she live for a few more years or is it a trip to the scrap yard in the sky? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well i have to admit she is trying her best to make me get rid of her, the idle timing belt snapped a couple of weeks back, she ended up on the back of a tow truck, got the garage to give her a full service, told them about the fuel pump if it was possable to wind back the flow intake fell on deaf ears i'm afraid, took a week to get her back, she is driving perfect except for the fuel consumption and cabin vibrations, she covers around 1000 klms per week driving for around 7 hrs each way to work only to stop for fuel, with out any problems, she is still very slow and still smokes like crazy & god it's loud as hell inside the cabin, but now even my wife is driving it which she swore she never would, i use it for everything, i walk straight past my other car without even looking at it, so i hope to keep her for another few years, do you know how often the oil should be changed the garaged put a sticker on the windscreen stating every 3000mls, how is your bus holding up.

Cheers
