Hello everyone, I have a 1994 galant S. The car recently through a code 43. I assumed it would be the EGR valve since the valve was really stiff to move back and forth. So I replaced it, reset the battery, did the drive cycle, and then the code came back. I see that the EGR system is made of the EVAP control solenoid, EGR solenoid, EGR temp sensor. I don't want to throw each of those parts at it, without knowing which one is truly bad. Could someone point me in the right direction with how to check the EVAP control solenoid, EGR solenoid etc?

The Evaporative Purge Solenoid is not tied into the EGR system at all. They receive their main vacuum source tho frum the same area. There most likely is a build up in the EGR passage. The inlet passage and outgoing passage at times would need to be cleaned out. They are usually full of carbon build up.

If the passage seems clean and free enough then the EGR solenoid would be the issue to look at.

I took off the solenoid, gave it power and ground, no click, so I am assuming it is shot. Today I checked the car again, and it is now also throwing a code 11 for the upstream 02 sensor. The car also seems to be running rich, lots of black on the bumper. which component of the egr system could cause something like this to happen?

okies this is teh thing. If the downstream sensor is malfunctioning it can make teh injectors inject more fuel , naturally teh upstream sensor the one at the converter will read that the car is running rich.

Most importantly tho, if the EGR valve is doing alot of recycling , as in the solenoid is stuck in the open position , its going to keep teh EGR valve open and the system will run richer than its normally spossed to. the issue may be the EGR vacuum solenoid. If its stuck partially open it will have the EGR partially open also to a degree and make teh car run richer than its spossed to. This can be yur issue. being the EGR recycles exhaust gas frum the upstream (before the catalytic converter) part of teh exhaust its onlee correct for the upstream heated oxygen sensor to pick that up.

thank you for input soo much man. i got my hands on a egr control solenoid from a 92 talon turbo. the plugs are the same, the only difference is there is a third spot for a vacuum line if need be, but it has a cap on it. do you think it would be safe to try the egr solenoid, the new o2 which i already purchased, and get the new egr vacuum control solenoid? i am to the point where I am ready to make a blocking plate for the egr valve and eliminate the system. But from what I have read this could significantly reduce the gas mileage. ahhh damn dsms!

That cap is on that port is just a vacuum vent. Nothing goes there , its just a vacuum vent for the solenoid. I would clear teh codes and try the solenoid first. With the egr functioning correctly it should not repeat teh code.

I replaced the egr solenoid, and upstream oxygen sensor, reset the PCM. I have driven about 80 miles so far and no check engine. So far so good, time will tell if those components resolved the issues.

Sounds great. Yeah the upstream HO2 sensor would set a code within 3-4 driving key cycles and well under 80 miles of driving . All seems good
