I have a 97 GS 2.0 non-turbo 5 spd<_< . My problem is I'm getting a noise coming form the transmission. The noise is kind of like a squealing/ grinding. This only happens when the clutch pedal is released. If you push in the clutch it stops. It goes away after you drive like a 1/4 mile. It will not make this noise the rest of the day, but when I start it in the morning ( the next day) it will make it again and then go away. I installed a new clutch assembly and throw out bearing not long ago. I'm stumped as to what it could be, anyone got any ideas???

yes it uses gear oil. I used 85-140 with a moly additive. I've used this combo on very high stress applications and it has proved itself. I went to a shop and they say it maybe internal bearings. Because when you let off the clutch pedal there is still a shaft turning. Still I want your guys and gals imput. I'll keep you informed of the results, so as if anyone else has this type of problem then they will know what it is. Kind of spread the wealth so to speak.

wow....thats a thick oil. im not going to say that oil that thick is bad for the transmission, but it could be the cause of the noise

does the clutch ever get stuck on the floor?

No, the transmission does not have any problems while in operation. I have run 85-90 in it and was still making the noise. That is why I tried a heavy oil. I figured that if it was bearings (internal) that would quiet them down, and it did not work.

The trans shop said it was internal bearings on the trans. I would do this myself but I got my shop filled with another project at the moment. I'm going to get the full details from the shop and take pics of the old bearings. I hope this will help some others out. ;)

The bearing inside your gearbox is making sounds. That`s one of the reasons I took my gearbox apart few days ago.
Anyway, do not use heavy oil in your transmission. Use lighter oil because it will provide better lubrification of the bearings on lower (and higher) temperatures.

I attached a picture of the bearing (bearing from my tranny), so you can see what does it look like, and what is causing those noises...

I was running the thinner oil at first(85-90). Then I figured I would try the thicker oil to try to preload them so to speak. But nontheless its got to come apart. I would do it myself but I got my "old school" 48 ford truck apart in my shop. This is not my motor but its close to what mine looks like going into it.
I know its not mitsu but I like anything that goes fast and looks cool.

I have 97 5 speed GS, and guess what. My car is did the same thing. I the mornings, cold weather...the most horrible screeching noise in the world. Depressed the clutch...and i went away. I only stopped after it warmed up. I feel your pain...trust me it was the worst headache in the world. Every tranny shop said it was something different, everyone said the other guys were idiots.

Turns out i was an idiot and i bought a new mission (STUPID) <_<

Hope you have better luck with yours, and gimmie a heads-up on your result

Good luck

Its a stage 4 8-71 its running 25 psi of boost with intercooler. Its a 572 CID, running on alky about 1500 hp  :offtopic:

Well... the tranny is apart there was .002 play on the throwout bearing. I'm not sure if there is 2 different shaft sizes?, but it looked excactly like the one I replaced. 2nd gear had a slight grind in it when put under load. The is a shaft in there that is factory assembled. The trans shop guy said the sound is likey coming from there. THe cost of just that shaft is just under what it would cost for a remanufactured trans. So here my choices:
1. Put new bearing is the rest of the trans and new thrrowout bearing and hope its not that shaft. $900
2. Get a reman tranny and new throwout bearing and know for a fact that its fixed. $1300

I think I will spend the extra $$$ and know its fixed right the first time. Cause if I do #1 and it does not fix it then out that money and still have to do #2.

I can feel a big price tag comming, but the problem as i see it is your throwout bearing! I also have a mazda Miata (same style clutch) It made a crazy noise like yours and after replacing the clutch and baering it was gone. I replace the clutch only because it had to be removed to get to the bearing. so if your shop if digging into your transmission, they are wasting time and your money! :57:

I replaced the throwout bearing and it was still making the noise. I think $1300 for the complete deal remanufactured tranny installed is not that bad a deal. The tranny alone costs $1000 at my door. So the shop is charging me 300 for labor and oil.
