Alright, this race doesn't involve me, I was just witnessing it.
I just moved down to Huntington Beach in February. Being that I only have my Eclipse, it is taking quite a bit of time to move my shit from my house in Hesperia, so it takes a few trips and a few weeks, what with work and what not. On my 2nd trip down, I get off the 22 freeway, and turn onto Brookhurst. About 2 lights down, I hear the wonderful sound of a medium deep engine rev followed by a blow-off sound. Twice. In quick succession. I look around, and I hear a third one. In the direction of the sound I see a Hummer H2 pulling up to a light going the opposite direction of me. I immediately thought, wow... some idiot put a 4 banger turbo motor in their Hummer... how sad. Then I see the Evo pull up along side it. OOHHHH. That makes sense now. It is a silver/gray color with a mild kit, something slightly different from stock, or maybe it was stock and the paint made it look a thousand times better, but it looked nice. So it's sitting next to the Hummer, and it revs again. Twice. This time all the up to about 6K rpm, each time making the most beautiful blow-off sound. Steady and crisp, it didn't stutter. Then, to my amazement, the Hummer revved back. My god, the deep growl of that engine as it climbed the power band. I felt the sound. The light turns green. Both vehicles shoot off the line, the Evo quickly pulls ahead, but only barely. The Hummer quickly catches after only a second to a second and a half. My light is still red, so I turn my head to watch, and they are both keeping pace with each other, quickly blowing through the next light. As they get farther away, the deep powerful Hummer engine still thundering down the way, with only the blow-off valve rivaling the dominance of the larger engine. By the time they had reached the next light after that, I wasn't able to tell who was ahead, and my light had turned green. A 2-4 second time frame, and the two most unlikely of rivals had faced off in mid-day traffic. Which around here is pretty scarce at around 2-5 o'clock. I have never seen that Hummer or that Evo around here since, either being that they lost thier vehicles, or they were just passing through. It was still an event to behold.
