I just picked up a engine block, but the guy I got it from didnt have the piece that holds the crankshaft in. Is it interchangeable with another block?

It might help if you tell us what the block is from?

Oops, my bad. I wrote it at work and had to cut it short. The block I have is from a 96 TSI and I want to put the piece that holds the crank to the block (the other half of bearings) From my GST engine, in it. That would make more sense If I knew what it was called. :)

From what I was told, those engines are Line-Bored and one block could be offset just a tiny bit so the 2 halves of the bearing might not line up right. But thats why Im asking, because People on this site know more than any of my friends when it comes to DSM's :P

Drives: 1996 Talon AWD. Built, but no longer drives: 1997 mitsubishi eclipse RS; 1990 Talon AWD; 1995 Talon AWD, 1997 Talon AWD. Seems like a pattern

it's called a girldle or bedplate depending on who you ask. most commonly girdle because it isn't a true bedplate like the 420a engine.

you are correct that the block and girdle are matched to each other and can't be interchanged without machining. Just like greeny said, take it to a machinist to be line bored and then you will be fine. just make sure you write down what size bearings he tells you to use so you don't forget
