Hi all,
can anyone shed any light on this problem, got a 1995 shogun 2.8td glx lwb, that tonight decided to squeal like a stuck pig when i started it, squealed for a few minutes of the journey and then stopped. the temp gauge then shot off the scale and 3 warning lights came on and stayed on. when i stopped the engine after a short journey i could hear bubbling ! I am a complete novice with motors and dont have a manual. i have read a few threads on the forum and maybe it could be the alternator but not sure. the 3 warning lights are the battery, oil and the orange fluid light on the left. any advice would be greatly appreciated
cheers gravyspider

Yep, sounds like you threw the alternator belt or at least came loose enough to stop spinning. Not sure why your coolant is bubbling as the water pump is driven off the cambelt. Have a good look under the hood for any obvious problems plus check your fluid levels for any strange colour, level, etc. and report back.

Try not to drive until you have sorted just in case something else more serious has occured.

Well if this is the 4M41 diesel engine i kno , the belt that is for the water pump is also on the water pump . The belt could have most likely come off after getting hot. Either the water pump bearing froze , which could explain a coolant lose and squiling belt , and then the belt either popped after getting extremely hot or came off, and since it turns the alternator also the alternator stopped charging which would make the battery indicator come on.

As such , the bearing in the alternator could have gone bad also , to make the belt make the noise and also either break or come off , , and which it would have stopped turning the water pump , and the coolant circulation would have stopped .

I'm not familiar with the diesel engine but I wouln't think that the alternator and water pump share the same belt. If they do its perfectly logical that the symptoms you describe are due to the failure of one or more connected components (ie alternator, water pump or belt itself).

Well the 4M41 is a straight 4 2.8 turbo diesel engine , usually with intercooler. As of my knowledge this diesel engine , unlike 4G9 4cyl engines , 6G7 engine series and a select other , the 4M4 engine is similar in ways to the 4G6 series except its larger displacment and its diesel and have a similarly mounted water pump that is not timing belt driven like the above ones.
