Sorry Rich, I as mentioned in the other thread, US models do not get such option.
We just have full time AWD, which uses a viscous coupling to provide LSD action. However, older JDM AWD Galants (from 1990 or so) used to have a “switchable” transmission, which allowed you to select between three modes:
AWD - just like US 4X4 - locked center differential FWD - Locked center differential and then disengaged transfer case (no RWD).
My guess is that Mitsu must have adapted that old style center diff lock for an “off road” or “all terrain” use. I would love to hear if I am on the right track here!
The odd part was that those old Galants didn't have means to change those selections. You actually had to jack up the car, unbolt a keeper bracket and manually switch them. Sounds like you might have a solenoid of some type to perform this fuction.
Another point of reference, mid 90's Toyota Rav4 had a locking center differential (meant to be used on snow or heavy mud). So this also supports the same function from Rav4’s competitor.
To test this, select the "A/T" mode and make a slow (under 5mph), tight (full lock on the steering wheel) turn on an pavement. If it is, in fact, locked, you will feel binding in the tires. It should also be very difficult to push the car with steering turned all the way (in ether direction)
