Okies Yu have a 95 GR with INVECS , with a StepTronic manual shift gate capable right(or tiptronic as yu refer to it) The TQ convertor is not a friction clutch. The 1-4 and over run set of clutches in the transmission are friction. The TQ convertor is basically a big circulating drum with 2 invers set of impellers that transmission fluid swirl around and then get recentered thru teh center and out to the gear sets. An aged or failing TQ converter will make noise or in most Mitsubishi's just stop operation of the transmission.
One things , a restricted catalytic converter can cause this issue. Especially after it warms up/heats up. In many cases it flows well under lighter loads but not under higher loads when RPM ranges are higher and quick , causing a "strain" and the vehicle seems to be "holding " back. Also If the transmission has not been serviced , this can be the case. if the transmission filter and oil is dirty. And the filter , especially after warming up has pulled in all the debris in the oil and it has compiled on the screen of the filter making it hard for fluid to pass thru, especially at higher rpm ranges when the flow rate is high. And when it cools the debris and everything rest settles in the base of the transmission again until driven for a bit. One other thing can be a clogged or restricted fuel filter. It will in many aspects do the same thing as a restricted transmission filter and hinder the performance.
On first start up even tho having a restriction , the fuel filter has most of the debris settles in the lower portion until after driving a while when the fuel pump pressure moves it up into the passage restricting pressure. Thus hindering fuel pressure and also fuel pump performance. Also causing the fuel pump to get hotter than usually and thus not putting out max pressure, as especially needed for max performance
