searched the forum but came up empty handed.
It's when the car first starts moving and sounds kind of like plastic scraping on the ground. It only lasts a split second and only does it within like the first 20' or so.
It happened on the 08 ES, and it does it on the 09 Ralliart as well. So i'm sure it must do it on you cars too???
WTF IS it...it's bugging the crap out of me!

Do you put your emergency break on, and release (obviously) before you start driving?
Or maybe you have some plastic dragging and scraping on the ground?(IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Could it be surface rust on the rotors? If it is raining or humid outside & the car sits....you might start seeing some surface rust appear on the rotors. Once you start driving the car, you would hear something that sounds like a rubbing or dragging sound for a little bit....until it wears off...you might hear something like that sound.

Or am I way off on this. I hear a sound like that on miine form time to time...but only when it is humid or rainy out.

nah, no rust on the rotors, but that is sort of what it sounds like. Exept it only happens once and only lasts like half a second. Also, it's not instant, like the first revolution of the rotor, its usually after like 10 feet.
I looked all over on the ES for a loose plastic engine tray piece or something else obvious, but nothing.

Only used the ebrake if it was on an incline...and it makes the sound regaurdless.

Yeah the 08 did it and the ralliart too.... its annoying but liveable I guess. Just wish I knew what it was. So explain how the ABS checks itself? Where is the ABS solenoid?

I'll listen close when I go out for lunch today, but in 8 months of having my 09 gts I have never heard/noticed such a noise. I see someone mentioned the abs check, but idk could it be related to the cvt / sst trannys, cause I've never heard it or noticed it in the manual?

Update: when I went out for lunch I listened but didn't hear/notice anything, did both... going reverse after sitting and later going forward after sitting.

This isn't my car in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgecdDPCaO0...feature=related

if you watch that video, at about 15 seconds, you hear the 'click click click click' sound from the engine. I THINK that is the sound that people are describing here. We had confirmation previously that it was the ABS system doing a self diagnostic and I got further verification when I read through the service manual for the 2008 Lancer.

Hope that helps.

Regards.

No man. That's when you start the car, not when you drive the car.
That's not what we're talking about here.

Anyway, I haven't really noticed anything like that on mine either - with the exception of backing up sometimes after the car has been sitting around. It does make a scraping noise then occasionally, but it sounds like metal against metal and it's right of the bat and goes away in a couple seconds.

The same thing happens to my car. As soon as you start to pull away from a light or something it almost sounds like your running over plastic. Its very strange. no idea what it is though but your not the only one its happening too. i got a 08 ES and it starting happening almost as soon as i go the car.

the lancer makes 2 noises first when u start the car the oil control valve for the mivec goes off... series of distinct click noises
second after u start moving the abs runs a self check makes kind of a sproing noise the solenoids are built into the abs unit itself

if after making these self checks and either system has a problem the check engine light comes on for the oil control valve

and the abs light would come on for abs problem..

but otherwise these are both normal noises (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

so crank up the metallica and motor on
(or which ever floats your boat)

Scratch my last post, I hear it now too..

i have the 09 CVT, here is how i replicated the sound:

Turn the car on, turn the radio off, in a place where there is very little ambient sound. Shift into drive and CREEP forward. You WILL hear a 'scraping' noise.. it only lasts about half a second, but if you pay attention, it is there.. not sure about the manual tho..

but it was verified that this was normal, no?

Regards.

I read on another forum a while back that it's got to do with the CVT. That explains why it's only present on the CVTs. It's kinda annoying but apparently harmless and part of the design.

That's strange. Most M/T people say they don't hear this.
