They are decent... nothing special. You don't need an aftermarket head unit, but I would recommend one.

Technically - no, you don't need anything else. But - you'll never get the best of those speakers unless the rest of the system is upgraded to all work together. New headunit, amplifier, fresh wiring and speakers. I always recommend staying with the same manufacturer for everything rather than mixing things up. If you like Alpine, go with a full Alpine audio system.

You should not buy a Pioneer head unit, or anything Pioneer. They are sub-par to brands like Alpine, Kenwood, Kicker.... And if you can, buy those type-r's instead of the s's. The type-s's are pretty nice, but those type-r's have the ability to be stupid loud if you get the right stuff for them.

Pioneer... sub-par to kenwood and kicker... PLEASE!

Kicker is the most over priced, over rated, and over glorified brand out there. Kenwood is just the American version of the German Pioneer. If time has shown us anything... germany tech>usa tech. Alpine's head units are over priced for what you get, you are better off with Eclipse. For speakers you get more for less with Infinity than you to with Alpine. For amps you can get twice the quality and power for half as much with Audiobahn. And lastly, for subs, Pioneer premier will hit harder, and last longer, than any type-r.
