Replaced a starter motor on a Mitsubishi magna TR executive V6 93.
Turn the key and I can hear it engage but it is only touching the outer part of the flywheel.
Took it off and I can see the wear on the outer part of the flywheel (from the new starter motor)
I don't really want to give up on this one but I don't want to end up having to replace the flywheel by being stubborn.
Has anyone replaced the starter before and is there a knack to it that they would mind sharing with me?

Signed persistent

Had a look see again last night.
* The starter motor is flush up against the tranie
* The bolts can be seen clearly going all the way through the starter motor
* There is no give if I pull on the starter motor.
BUT
I then compared the two starter motors and what did I see.... They are different. The cog on the new one is recessed back about 5 mm so when it engages it only gets to the outer edge of the flywheel.
Other then that the starters are identical.
Chain rattle you where on the right train of thought going for the starter motor and not the assembly into the car.

I checked on the box and its fine for Mitsubishi's but I think it might be a latter model Mitsubishi

Solved.
Chain rattle stop on the manual and auto version of the TR have different start motors.
The fella at the wholesalers measured it up and only then was he sure which one was required.
Very happy
