Ok brand new newbie here-I have searched the forums but not found a problem exactly like mine so here goes...1998 2.4GDi spacewagon, 46000 miles when we bought it last July.From the start it had unstable idle revs-they would go up and down particularly when the car was warm, and would cut out at traffic lights.It never did this when it was cold or raining,only when it was warm or I'd been driving a while.Well we kept meaning to get it looked at and then the clutch went-got that fixed-cost us 423...car was OK...then one day my bf had a look at the car,topped it up with oil,fiddled with the throttle position sensor as someone (mechanic) told him that was the problem.Well-he unclipped a sensor,car would not go above 3000 revs and check engine light came on...clipped the sensor back in....and same problem-revs were unstable still but now would not go above 3000.So we got another throttle position sensor(after one stupid company sent us a throttle body twice!!still waiting on my refund from that)...and there is no change, other than the revs are now stable...but they are high-idle revs are around 1750-2000, and the car will not go above 3000 revs.The check engine light is on constantly, but if he tilts the sensor the light flashes.We are at a loss as to what it could be.A mechanic looked at it the other day and said it could be the carburrettor or the cat or even a blocked air pipe,but without diagnostics he couldn't tell.I've been without my car for 3 weeks now(and when you have 5 kids that need taking to school which is 4 miles away and your bf's car is a honda prelude-4 seater-it makes it very difficult to get them there).The mechanic is picking it up today and taking the car to the garage so we'll see what he says it is, but does anyone here know what it could be or has had similar problems?I will add that the car has lots of soot like stuff coming from the exhaust all the time plus if you stay in idle for a while it smells like rotten eggs.

looks like the maf sensor box (this contains balast, mass air flow and air temp) could be faulty and running the car to week check spark plugs for over heating, also the car could now be in limp mode and need reseting

Hi Polishrose, your problem is the same as mine posted further down the page. i have a 1999 2.4gdi auto with engine management light on permantly. Just to let you know its been going on for 12 weeks now and i last monday took it to a mitsu garage for diagnoses and told it is the throttle control vavle (body) and to replace with new is 1400. I've already had this part re furbished and it is now back at the garage that done that. Could you advise where you got your throttle body from as i'm now after a complete replacement as my garage say they cant get one.
My car does the sane as yours turn on revs at 2000 and drives very loudly at 3000.
It is also my wifes school car for the kids and dogs and is driving her mad.

Let me know if you get yours sorted and i'll do the same.

Well still no joy....so far we have replaced both accelerator position sensors,throttle body plus the 2 throttle position sensors,maf sensor,ecu....still no change.Anything else I can try?The diagnostics showed up the aps and tps only.The mechanic has checked the wiring and that all seems to be OK.

I had similar problem with previous version of space wagon, It was faulty distributor unit, the ignition coils were arching during run, even the car start okay but does not go above 3000 revs. In my case the car was also heating up as well, make sure if care engine heat up then it can damage the gasket could cast lot of labour charges.

if its sooty, and you can get an eggy smell i'd say its your cat causing grief. first step is to get some cata clean and give it a go as this stuff has been proven. if not then i'm at a loss sorry.

This version of the spacewagon doesn't have a distributor.

Update-the car is still not fixed....it has had a new throttle body and sensors, new aps sensors(well when I say new I mean used but guaranteed working),a cam sensor(this one was new),a different ecu and immobiliser...none of these made any difference at all.The cat has been checked and is fine,lambda sensor has been checked...we're at a complete loss as are all the mechanics who have looked at the car.The faults showing up are still tps and aps.I could cry (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
