Hi Guys, something cropped up with my 97 Montero 4d56 5 spped manual today. Drives great but sometimes and not everytime, it wont come out of 2nd. The clutch operates and disengages the gear but will not pop out of second. This is random, anyone any ideas as to why please.

Other small thing is that rev counter is not accurate. Sometimes rev counter is fine and next the needle swings anywhere. Obviously a lose or dirty connection somewhere, or sensor, can anyone tell me where to look in the first instance.

Thanks Guys

HI grumbleweed

Are you really sure your clutch is working? it sounds like it isn`t.
mayby there is some air inside the clutch actuating cylinder and sometime there isn`t enough pressure to completly disconnect.

If it were a gearbox Prob it should be permanent.

When the prob shows up next time try to press the clutch two ore three times and try again.

good luck

markus

and what is a rev counter(sorry, my english)

Thanks Ahaggar

A friend had also told me that it could be one of the seals in the slave cylinder so we are going to have a look at that.

A rev counter is a Tacho. I have just had the timing belt and fan belts changed due to an oil leak around the top seal and rocker cover seal and the needle on the tacho doesnt fluctuate as much, obviously its a bit cleaner now, but still seeing the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Grumbleweed

I can`t see a connection between the Tacho and the timing belt because the signal comes out of the transfer gearbox.
If you unscrew the "cable" (it is mechanical Tacho) as you see on the picture from a L200 and see if there is some wear.
on L200 it is normal to have a swinging needle on the Tacho when you drive with low speed, sometimes it swings between 10 and 30 kph when you
drive on 20 khp.

The slave cylinder is sometimes a problem on the mitsus, I lost it twice because the piston just fell out of the cylinder.
If you go offroad, and get stuck in sand or mud the sealing breakes and the dirt will go between cylinder and piston and then the slave cylinder is gone.
A autback repair is to change the break fluid to a gear oil or equal fluids.
You`ll have a different feeling, and the clutch is harder to press but you can go on.

Hi Ahaggar

very sorry for the delay in replying but been busy. The problem with the 2nd gear has dissipated and only returned these last couple of days but manage quite well. The suggestion that the seals need replacing seems good but chnaged the oil in the gearbox and transfer box and much better, so really dont know.

Have bigger fish to fry now though, driving today and getting puffs of grey smoke from exhaust, which for diesel is not good. Just checked the rad and have oil in rad and overflow. Obviously appears that the head gasket has blown between the oil and water and oil also getting into one of the pots.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards
