Hi am a new comer here from trinidad & tobago, i got a 1991 mitsubishi space wagon wit a 4g63 cab engine..it runs really smooth once im not drivin more than 80 kmph..If i drive over that speed maybe for a period of more than 5 minutes the tramsmission gears stops changing n it goes into "safe mode". I have spent thousands of tt dollas tryin to get d problem fixed, but it seems local mechanics in trinidad are cluless about it..I LOVE this car,and its in great condition..any help from any of you guys would be greafull..(It seems that something is getting hot and sending d tramsmission to safe mode, i dont know if its a wire, sensor or tramsmisiion oil.)

Its a Carb model? The Detent cable can be adjusted to tight or sticking. this will cause it to not shift any other gear after certain speeds.

Yea its a carb model..i check on the detent cable as you said..the weird part about it is dat if the transmission gears stop changing, and i come to complete stop, put the shifter in park, switch off n re-start..the gears will change as if nothin was wrong, until i hit high speeds again..

i have a similar problem. My 1998 GDI Exceed chariot will only move in the 3rd gear. I can reverse and park but when i put it in drive, it goes straight into the 3rd gear and the neutral light starts blinking.

I must add that this started happening after i did an engine swap.

any help will be much appreciated.

I experienced this incident this week during heavy rain and the road is flooded. What I did is I turned off the engine, reset the ECU and start again. Afterwards, it normalized. What I think is that transmission oil is needed to be changed. (I parked this on a dry area before turning off the engine.)

In lots of cases , when the transmission is not shifting and staying in 3rd gear on take off. Its either the Transmission fuse is burnt , loose or the TCM is faulty. When the TCM goes bad it does not power the shift solenoids in the valve body in the transmission , so the transmission fluid onlee flows one path which is 3rd gear. The TCM is wut opens the valve passages to divert fluid and pressure to certain gears.

Hello there!

May I know where can I find the transmission fuse? Is it easy to replace? How about TCM? i believe this would be my problem since locking to 3rd gear happened when the transmission seemed to be blocked (changing from 3rd to lower gear, some shaking on the transmission occured). Is changing of transmission fluid would help?

Thanks in Advance!

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) fuse is located in the vehicle fuse panel. It will be labeles "3AT" or "4AT". The TCM is going to be under the center of the dash console on the floor on most models.

Thanks for your info! really appreciate it. By the way, my grandis is of N84W model. Would changing of Transmission oil be easy to do? What is the recommended trans oil? I don't have the service manual for my car since I bought it as a second hand car.

Thanks!

It is not that hard to do. There is a drain plug near the outboard CV shaft on the right side (standing in frunt the vehicle). The drain plug is visible under the transmission. As for on the model should be an F4A42 , if 2wd or W4A42 for 4wd. Drain the fluid frum the drain plug. On this model should have a servicable screw on transmission fluid filter on top of the transmission near the range position switch. Yu can replace this filter.
