Does anyone else have or experienced this problem? How about removing your key from the ignition while in drive? I am going to take my car to the dealer for the parking brake recall and I will ask them to check it out, but in the mean time if anyone has any input on this please let me know. Thanx, Az

Mine will roll backwards in drive, stopped on a fairly steep hill, without my foot on the brake.

Maybe there is a conspiracy every car I have ever driven will roll backwards in drive on a steep hill.Or maybe every body should put their foot on the brake or turn the idle up to 2500 rpms.

thanks for the input, but to elaborate on my previous question I accidently left my Ende in drive, shut the ignition off and removed the key...I did not think that the shift was in drive because the key came out easily. I went into a store and came back out and noticed that my Ende had rolled out of the parking lot. When I got back into the vehicle I noticed that the gear was still in drive.

Automatic transmissions rely on hydraulic pressure to engage gears. If the engine is not running, no hydralic pressure, no gear engaged.

Make sure you put your vehicle in park when you park and, under most circumstances, it won't roll away! ;) Of course to be safe you should engage the parking brake as well, which will solve those rare circumstances when simply being in park is not good enough.

As far as those circumstances when "park" is not enough - if I correctly remember how automatic transmissions work - placing the transmission in park engages a park dog which will not allow the (drive) wheels to spin in the same direction, but will allow them to spin in opposite directions. Pretty rare to be in a (parked) situation where this could happen but it is possible.
