I had this exact same problem when I fitted a new battery to my 02 plate 1.6 space star - before the car was fine, after it was adog and stalled at the most inconvienient timees !!!!

I recall I found the awnser on a forum (maybe even here) and the problem is the ECU needs to be 're-teached'.
The cure was this -

WITH THE ENGINE COLD:

1) disconnect battery leads
2) leave disconnected for 10 minutes
3) short LEADS together (this gets rid of any residule charge due to capacitance) - and note leads - NOT BATTERY TERMINALS (this is dangerous)
4) reconnect battery leads
5) start engine and idle FOR AT LEAST 15 MINS WITH NO THROTTLE INPUTS
6) as the engine idles and warms up the sensors feedback to the ECU and it 'learns' the cars characteristics again
7) after the 15mins and once the car is at normal operating temperature that should be it - go for a 15 minute drive on a stop/start type roads (ie: not motorway) - around a housing estate would be fine.
8) END !!!

Since carrying out this proceedure my space star is back to as it was pre-battery change with no problems.
Hope it works for you
