Hi,
I've been wanting to build a daily driver/weekend track car (road racer, not drag) in the 300 hp/mid-to-high 12 second range for some time now; I originally looked at dsms, but was unable to find anything decent in my area for the right price, so I ended up with an '89 5.0 Mustang. It's a nice car and all (yeah, right), but I've had an open mind about acquiring a mk3 turbo supra or other rwd turbo car for a while; by chance I happened upon my "new" 87 starion at the local junkyard and bought it as a builder car for $500, and they're selling me a motor out of another starion for $120 as was negotiated into the deal. I'll have my work cut out for me for a while just getting the car tuned up and running halfway decent, but I need to know asap what it will take me to get her to >300 rwhp.
I've been looking around in what little spare time I've managed to get this weekend, and I see no shortage of high-hp starions, but everyone seems to have a different combo. I'm a little vexed that I made the mistake of thinking that this starion had a 4g63 in it -- a motor that I already knew had good aftermarket support and is capable of making well over 300 whp without breaking the bank.
So, since I'm stuck with an rg54b, what kinda "recipe" do I need to make a reliable 300-400 rwhp car? I'll have an extra motor, and once I sell my Mustang I'll have some money to throw at it, so I can take my time with the build and do it right, but I need to know if this will be something that I can afford. What I've seen gives me the impression that most of the higher hp starions and conquests are very custom -- a stark contrast from the 5.0 world, where a simple head/cam/intake/other boltons combo with a tune will get you that 300-400 hp relatively easily.
I want to go big with this car, or go with something else entirely if it's beyond me; what's a realistic figure for the $$$$ that it will take to accomplish this, and where do I start looking for information?
Thanks in advance!

how much is your budget ? my friend did a rebuilt 2jz motor and a single turbo kit in his Starion, pushing around 450hp or so, or you can stay with the stock g54b and rebuilt it with better internals, rework the head, valves, cam, ect, but if you going to keep the g54b, you will need to upgrade to MPI instead of the stock TBI, that'll add at least 50hp to the stock which will be close to 250hp, after you get the MPI done, off course you can upgrade fuel pump, injector ect, then you could go big on the turbo now, because you have good fuel supply now with the standalone setup, getting 400hp is very possible or if you want to stay with the Mitsu, you can get wide block version of the 4g63t, built it up and longitudinally mount it to the Starion, there's all kinds of ways to get the Starion/Conquest up the power but it won't be cheap. good luck
