Hi, I recently did the distributor on sat. I wanted to know how you can tell if the timing is messed up? Because now my idle is a little weird but im thinking its because im still waiting for my IAC Valve. Started it today idle went normal first like 5 sec it was down to 500 and then jumped up to 1000 but then went back down to like 600.

Thanks

if you had your battery disconnected, the ECU is resetting, it can supposedly take up to three days to reset, then your idle will be fine.

Well its only been 2 days. Im gonna change out the IAC tomorrow when it arrives at napa and see what happens but its only idling at 500 right now and when its idling the car feels like its about to stall out or something but it doesnt. The dealership said the Distributor was bad changed that and now the car is running good but they also said the IAC Valve is bad too so changing that tomorrow and hopefully it will fix my problem. Thanks for all of your help.

you can ussauly take a 1/2 rachet and move the harmonic balancer clock wise. all markings should line up if its off by a teeth or two it wont idle normal

How would I tell if the timing is off? It does idle low right now around 500 and car jerks a little while just sitting there but somethings after driving a while it will idle fine around 800 - 1000.... Im thinking if it were timing it would always idle rough right? The idle air control valve maybe kicks in every once in a while?

if it gets fine after driving, then its not your timing. just raise the idle if it only happens at idle.

I did raise the idle when it was low at 500 rpms raised it to 900 or 1000 and then it went up to 1500 after driving a little so im thinking the dealership was right about the IAC Valve going out ill replace that and hopefully that fixes the problem. Thanks.

if you want to check your timing to see if it right, you can try this, pull out the #1 spark plug, the one closest to the timing gears, drop a long screw driver in, it will hit the top of the piston, the pull the timing gears cover out, turn you steering wheel all the way to the left, (i took the plastic cover under the fender well off)and use a 1/2 extension and a ratchet, turn the crankshaft pulley, (there is a timing mark on the crank shaft pulley, also has the marking right on the side next to the pulley at like 11 o'clock) you'll see the screw driver goes all the way up, when the screw driver reach it highest point, look at the timing gears you'll see the marking on the teeth the front one should be at like 9 o'clock, the back one should be like 3 o"clock, in other word, the mark on both gears should face each other, or at closest point together which should be line up to the head where the valve cover in contact with the head. and if you looking at the crank pulley, the mark on the pulley itself should be line up with the marking on the side of the pulley looks like a "T" somewhere at 11 o'clock, everything must be line up perfect, if 1 teeth is off, then you have a problem, it sound confusing but it very simple.
