My 1992 Diamnte seems to be stuck in second. It wont change up or down. Is there any simple easy to fix things that I can check or should I put it straight into the shop?

Do you mean third gear? MItsubishi transmissions have a fail safe mode so when a trans problem is detected only third gear is used.To verify this you will probably feel a thud when put in reverse. You need to have someone with a scan tool check your trans computer for fault codes.

Yes I think it is third that it is stuck in and yes it does thud into reverse. I am having the fault codes read tomorrow. I will post what the problem was.

Hello Nick,

As mittech states, it sounds as if your transmission is in fail safe mode. In "Fail Safe" mode, the '92 D will remain in either 2nd or 3rd gear. I've experienced both with my '92 tranny.

You can pull the codes from your TCU (transaxle Control Unit) yourself. It's an easy procedure to perform and will cost you about $23 for the tools needed.

For pulling the codes from your TCU, or even your ECU main computer, you can go to this post and find out more ---> http://www.diamanteowners.com/component/op...,59402/catid,1/ You will also find what each fault code represents/means.

If you need more specific tranmission questions answered you can go here and ask ---> http://www.importperformancetrans.com/foru...ewforum.php?f=1 This is a message board on tranmissions that are specific to your D's tranny.

Hope this helps
TG

I found the answer to my tranny problem on my '93galant... it was the computer! one of the capacitors was leaking the same way as the ecu caps do.

I changed the caps, cleaned up and it's all sweet again now...

thinking about it, my galant now moves through all the gears, but only moves into overdrive when the tranny is warm and seems to stay in a lower gear until then,

is that anything like yours

have you checked the fluid level, which if low might cause the fluid to heat up and read bad to the comp, or perhaps a faulty temp sensor in the tranny reading hot when it's only warm causing a bad reading?

Hey guys, can you all please post the answer to your tranny being stuck in third gear 'limp mode'. I currently have a Mitsubishi Chariot Grandis 2.4 GDI with the same problem. The car is slow in moving out and sometimes goes through all the gear changes. However it often get suck in third gear and the neutral light starts flashing also In reverse I get a thud .

I've managed to changed the speed sensor, but that didnot solved the problem. I know I am in the wrong part of the forum, but you all problem is identical to mine. Can anyone help me solved this problem with my car.

Regards,

Rambooka

hmmmmm, if anyone else has had this problem and fixed it, can they post their reply? i am still having trouble with this problem! seems like everyone gets it!
my 98 mitsubishi magna tf is still at a friends autoelectrician, he still has got the car there figuring what is wrong.........??????????? so far, he sent the computer away for testing,,...computer came back ok......i've had another dealer shop say the output shaft sensor? still problem plays up...neautral light flashes and goes into limp mode!

so if there are any helpful ideas or answers that'd be awesome!

there was a post before about a guy fixing his problem being the capacitors onboard the computer????? has that fixed ur problem?

sorry I couldn't help newguy, you have tried to pull codes though?

mine has been all sweet since the comp work, but you prob may be different as the dodgy caps are from 89-95 (i think I've read that somewhere)

the faulty temp sensor is a guess but what about sticky solenoids too? my trans (f4a22) apparently has that as a common problem along with weak overdrive plates and potentialy overheating pump if left idleing to long...you'll have to take it to bits to find out though.

good luck!
