My g/f was driving the car to work today and when she started the car up the rmps were up 2,000+ then when she put it in reverse and drive the rpms would drop down to 300 to 800 and fluctuate back and forth acting like its gonna just stall out... She was on her way to work at a stop sign and pressed the gas to go and it just cut out...

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem to this or have any idea what it could be, check engine light is not on.

Thanks a lot.

Could this be due to bad spark plugs/wires? Haven't changed them since we've owned the car and was planning on replacing them soon.

Yeah, most probably terrible sparks and cables. Needs new ones. Or if the computer is reset it might act up for a few days and go back to normal. Cause the ECU is trying to figure out where to idle exactly. is it auto or manual?

Well I think im gonna replace the plugs anyways... Because the car has been running horibly and making weird noises lately... Hopefully its just because of bad plugs Got Titanium Plugs...

Replaced plugs and car still running like crap and stalling.... Started car up earlier today started and stalled instantly did that over and over about 10 times then held the gas and started it up and let it rev up for a little and then rpms stayed at 1800 for a while then dropped down to a 1000... Drove it down the street and rpms were dropping down to 200 - 500.....

Well we took the car to the dealership for a drive ability test and so far he said the following are the problems...

MAF (MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR)
ECU may be bad
Fuel injectors are putting out to much fuel (may be due to ECU being bad...)
Only reading 7volts when its really pushing 14volts...

This is fucking horrible for a 2001. It has had its regular maintenance on

Oil Changes
Coolant
Air Filters
Oil Filters
Spark Plugs (Haven't changed wires they still look good.)

What would cause all of this stuff to be failing.... Maybe just the ECU?

It could be a number of things. of course he guessed the most expensive parts to replace right from the get go... dont let him replace shit till it has been tested and you see results.

Well there are 3 things wrong....

Mass Air Flow Sensor (Replaced)

ECU (Sending it in to be rebuilt) Dealer wants $1000 and autozone wants $588.99 with 3 month warranty found online for $299.99 with lifetime warranty

Idle Air Control Motor (Replaceing soon)

Dealer says after Mass Air Flow Sensor was replaced it doesn't stall anymore but its still putting out to much fuel and all the readings are way off because of the ecu and could cause damage driving the car how it is with the bad ecu.

He said he has seen the Idle Air Control motor make the ecu go out (not sure how) but thats what they told me.

I was wondering if anyone knows where to get an Idle Speed Control / Idle Air Control Motor... Heard they were both the same on my car.. I seen they have it at autozone but its just performance and he said that there would have to be adjustments for it because its universal...

Thanks for all your help.

Well heres an update:

Car is still in shop, Waiting on ECM (COMPUTER).

The guys that were supposed to rebuild the ECM said it has water damage and it corroded that's why its not working and they can't rebuild it since its in such bad condition.

The guy said it smelt like lotion or something got in some how.... I was wondering how lotion or any type of water could get in there inside the car? Does anyone know where its located? Is it behind the cd player, or behind the glove box?

I know my friends lotion busted in the car before I think in the glove box but don't see how it go in the computer.

Thanks

Well just got the car back from the dealership yesterday, Everythings running fine except for the fact when the cars cold and until it has been driven for about 10 - 15 mins when you stop a stop light or stop sign theres a bad vibration and I hear popping noises. Also I hear a squeal when letting off the break and right before pressing the gas. The guy at the dealership said it might be the timing belt thats making the vibrations....

Ideas? Suggestions? Thanks

I would suggest take it back to the dealer and tell them you still have a problem I bet you pay a lot a cash from the dealer so make worth.

That's why I don't go to dealers for repairs cuz they charged you with a lot money and ended up with bad repair. No offence to anyone that works for the dealers here, this is just base on my personal experience.

Naw it was $90 from the dealership to tell us the problem why the car was stalling and we replaced the computer and mass air flow sensor and car runs good just it has a rough idle and popping noises.

my '01 GT does the same thing. our scanner at our shop said it was the MAF last time. it does it occasionally still but it doesnt for a while and then starts again. Our computer also had a TSB on this problem. they have an ECU malfunction with the MAF on these cars. mine does the same thing with 86,000 miles on it.
