Hey guys was just hoping to do a couple of basic mods and was wondering if I was wasting my time... I was hoping to start of with a K&N filter and remove the cat... Has anyone had any problems removing the cat and is the gain noticable? What advantages are there with removing it? I have a 2.4 GDI engine so is it even ok to remove it with this engine? And the K&N are they worth the money is there a noticable gain from it? Now looking around the site I saw someone praising the Fuel saver Tornado!!!! Does it work and is the difference in fuel effiency and power worth it?

Thanks guys also any ideas on other cheep mods would be appreciated

The K & N will give you maybe 5hp. The catless will give you a max of 10 to 15 hp. And I do like tornado fuel saver.

I hear that the K&N offers some noticible improvements in throttle response.

the Catalytic converter, i'd keep for sake of the environment.

Ive heard mixed reviews about the tornado though...

I went for a full replacement induction kit for my V6-24 and a straight through sports exhuast. You can get a FSE valve (worth the money) and various other bits and pieces.

I have a K&N on my 2.4 and can't tell a difference in performance or fuel economy, mostly just a slightly more agressive air intake sound. I'm debating whether it was worth $50 or to return it and get another "tornado" fuel saver instead. I posted this elsewhere on this forum, but the best "tornado" is the knockoff one available on ebay, it outperformed the real tornado by far....or maybe it was just because they were different applications. But it was only like $20. And whatever you do, don't fall for the stupid ebay IAT performance chips! They always claim 20hp increase in their ads, but are absolut crap. Trust me.

I too am curious about the effectiveness of this tornado clone. I've always thought they were scams just like the magnets you strap on fuel lines and so on. Or, close to where you would place blinker fluid and cross drilled brake lines.

Tornado 1 xtra mil per gal if you are lucky and it will also reduce hp, It was tested by some car guys with dyno miles per gal. reader the whole nine yards on XM Radio.
And to the other guy who likes it, well it's all in your head if you thinnk you got more. :)

I had it on my ae101...er 96 corolla , no difference it's kinda like the "performance chip" a bust!! <_<

As for filters no way it can add 5hp!..maybe 2hp but that's stretching it. The K&N filters are a little less restrictive & thinner, so air passes a little easier making it sound a little throatier

i agree with most of you on the minimal increase in hp with a kn air filter, it does add some sound but not much of a noticeable pep in performance. but i believe to effectively use the full benefit of a kn air filter you need to upgrade the intake to either a SRI(short ram intake) or a CAI(cold air intake). the benefits of this inexpensive upgrade are definately worth the penny. with the increase in size of intake piping and the increase in air flow from the kn filter, they work great together in allowing the engine to breathe better! putting a performance air filter inside a box with a limited amount of induction really doesn't help much.

Free quick upgrade in induction-
i found that on my 03 galant there was a small plastic piece attached to the front of my engine compartment, leading right under where my hood latches. it couldnt have been more than 3/4 in tall and like 6 inches wide. this small induction port led from under the hood to the bottom of my air box. going from the thin induction port gradually getting larger and opening up into a, roughly, 2.5 in diameter hole in the air box. by removing this piece the intake was noticeably louder and little more peppy. my next step is to remove the air box all together and upgrade the to the CAI with a perf. air filter. worth it in the long run i assume.

as far as the tornado knock off... the tornado and knock off both use the exact same concept of just spooling the air in the intake. id imagine that if the car was sucking more air in... the spool would be greater causing an increase in the cars performance. so once again, with the limited induction from factory air boxes, maybe an upgrade is all thats needed to feel the true benefit.

lastly, you can get the knock off on ebay for 20 with shipping, and the cheapest short ram air intake i found on ebay was 40 after shipping...this is all for the 8g galant.
