I was driving around town this morning when suddenly the steering became really heavy and the dashboard displayed the Battery and Oil. I pulled over to the roadside and found that neither of the belts were rotating, thus not turning the alternator, water pump etc. The cause appears to be a loose crankshaft pulley bolt which released the tension to the belts. So now I have two questions.

1. Why would the bolt become loose on it's own? I've been driving the vehicle for a few months now, without incident.
2. Is it likely to have caused any damage to the engine?

My vehicle is a '97 Shogun v6 3.0 Auto GLS

i dont know about over there...but here they had a recall about loose crankshaft bolts...
i would tow it to your nearest mitsu dealer asap...

the bolt can strip out the threads in the crankshaft and there is a possibility of more damage yes...

I've asked around some 4x4 off-road friends and they have said that it is a common problem with the diesel Shoguns (TD) that it cause be a worn pulley. They hadn't heard of it on a Petrol v6 though. It can be fixed by replacing the pulley and using thread-lock on the bolt.

I've managed to torque the bolt up to near it's prescribed settings and I will see how it goes over the next few days. A replacement OEM pulley cost 75.00+ GBP which I would like to avoid if I can, but I would also like to avoid blowing the engine. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Their was a recall in the US on the older style crank bolts. They would vibrate loose and your pulley will snap the key and all sorts of expensive damage will happen. Order the new bolt, new woodruff key, and new crank pulley. Its worth doing to keep your truck from having a catastrophic failure.
