I am fairly new to the import engine. I know american cars... Do you have to take the head and oil pan off of a 2.6 Mitsu Turbo engine to do the Timing chain and balance shaft chain? Its an 88 Conquest. They original owner had a new head installed about 25,000 miles ago  , it looks in great shape but it makes a noise. Almost sounds like the timing chain is rubbing against a bolt  . The noise is not consistant but is always there. Its a fast noise so i know its valve train or external. I have removed all the belts to make sure the noise wasnt coming from an accessory. The chilton book i have here is not very clear, 95% of the book is about the colt and vista, they just throw in the conquest  . I guess that is easier than making a book specificaly for the conquest/starion. Any info would be great. If someone has any suggestions as to what else it could be, or for me to check, please let me know. Thanks ES

remove the head, intake, exhaust man. as 1 assembly you will need help with this.
then remove the front cover. after you remove the head assembly. look @ the top of the cover. those 2 bolt holes with guides in them will not allow you to remove the cove with out removeing the head.

more than likely the noise is the chain guides. chains should be ok,
but to be safe i would replace the whole set. chains, guides, tensioner.
not quiet cheap, but better insurance compared to doing it again
a few thousand miles later....

make sure you get the bolts on the oil pan that hold the timing chain case on.

Hold up may not be your timing chain... It may be a sloppy chain on the oil pump.
If the sound sounds like a (GrrrrRrr)nothing(GrrrrRrr) chain rubbing on the alum. There is a small access cover with 2 small bolts that give you access to a chain tensioner for the oil pump and will stop sound. Easy fix...(is in manual) and will save you a engine if the chain jumps. (if it does all oil presser is gone and all will be lost..(Turbo, cam bearings, crank bearings, BALLANCE SHAFT BEARINGS)...
Also If the timing chain has not been done every 50,000 then get it done(Weekest link in engine.)

Hope it helped, (Been there and T-shirt sucks)

Print off the manual.... Save the thing too and burn it to at least 3 disks....

Just from experience...
