Hi there! I have driven the 2001 LTD Montero 4 years ago while I was researching for a new family truck. However, due to budget and other reasons, I decided to get a minivan for my wife instead. Now, it is time for me to get a new car and I want to get an SUV. When I test drove the Montero 4 years ago, I fell in love with it after only 20 mins of driving. It was so comfortable and smooth. I haven't driven the new one yet with the new 3.8L engine. My questions are:
1. With the tip over controversy, is it still a big issue with the VSC system(or whatever it is called)
2. What is the avg mileage that you get with the 3.8L engine
3. How reliable is the Montero? I have seen the older version(90's) burned oil. Has this problem been fixed?
4. Should I get a brand new one of a used low mileage one?

Thanks a lot for any advice

I noticed your post last week and was going to post but I didnt think my inpuit would be very helpful but I own a Mitsubishi Montero 2000 and will give you my opinion.

1) Tip over I would say they are more like than a low pro vehicle to tip over obviously because of the higher center of gravity. I believe that anyone who buys an SUV would know this and drive accordingly. I don't believe this is an issue I have driven mine on mountain roads and pushed her to the limit and hse handles like a dream.

2) I have a V6 3.0 and the gas mileage is obviouslt lower than an 8 cilinder but wouldnt call it a low gas mileage vehicle but I'm happy with the mileage I get out of her.

3) I have never been stranded. I have almost 90K on her and I have replaced the power stearing pump the condenser clutch and that's it. I recently had an overheating problem with my A/T but I attribute that to my mechanic.

4) I am one who really doesn't trust previous owners but if you can find a low mileage Montero in good condition for a good price from a dealership that will has a preowned program I would say get preowned. Otherwise pay the extra money and get a new one.

Hope this helps 8)
