Hi All,

I've just bought a 1989 (UK) Short Wheel Base mitsubishi Shogun 2.5 Turbo Diesel Intercooler with 126k on the clock and a manual 5 speed box.

I've just noticed a 'knock' . It seems to occur at lower speeds in certain gears as you accelerate. Could anybody give me any ideas what I should try first to either iron out the knock or actually to work out what & where it's coming from. It doesn't sound like a metallic rattle but more of a definite regular knocking noise that seems to go once you get to a greater speed in whatever gear you are in.

I haven't had it serviced or anything yet, but I filled the tank with BP ultimate Diesel a few days ago, although it did still have 1/4 tank of whatever was in it before.

Interestingly, we have the same knocking with my wifes 1996 Ford Fiesta (1.4l petrol).

Cheers.

Kev

Hard to say without atctually hearing it but is it a mechanical sort of knock,i.e could it be something lose or something hitting off something else,or is it a noise from within the engine??If its a regular knock as you say and its coming from within the engine id guess it could be pistonslap??

Hi,

It's a regular noise that doesn't sound 'loose' or rattley' more of a definite knock really. Out of interest....pistonslap...what is it & is it serious/fixable?

Cheers.

Hi,

Thanks for that. The underlying sound that you can just make out on there is probably going at about the same rate, although I've only heard it from inside the vehicle as it doesn't do it when just idling. and obviously from inside the vehicle it doesn't sound as high pitched, but it could be that.

Thanks for the link.

Kev.

Try lowering the window with the radio off and see if you can make it out any better.:)
