First let me tell you a little about the car. It is a 91 3000gt vr4, it has a brand new 5 speed in it with a new factroy flywheel. It has a spec stage II clutch kit in it. He also put in a Stillen twin turbo downpipe with a borla cat-back exhaust system, I forgot it has an intake also. There is this guy that lives near us with a 2004 mustang SVT Cobra convertable, he wants to race the 3000gt. As far as we know the mustang is completely stock, still has the stock exhaust on it. What else do you think should be done to the 3000gt to make it win for sure? Everything else on the 3000gt is stock including the turbos. We were thinking along the lines of a boost controller next, bigger injectors and a better fuel pump, a blow-off valve will be added also. What do you guys think?

Most cobras were factory supercharged.

A good driver. My EVO can take a cobra. It's all about shifting points, take off, and making sure you don't miss any gears or burn any clutches.

boost controller wouldn't suck. 9bs only make 9~11 psi at readline though.

If you want to beat him, just race an 1/8th mile, and then the AWD launched correctly will smoke him if he's stock.

Full BPU 3000GT/Stealth with a good driver is a mid/high 12 sec car. Cobras are do-able.

Gut precats/main cat/install test pipe.
Get a down pipe
get a real boost gauge (factory uses maf and engine loads and then calculates boost. not that accurate)
Open element filter WITH cold air wall
boost controller ~ not a cheap manual one. it will spike and suck. there are good manual ones, but they're few and far between
catback (though the stock one isn't that bad. Don't use sport mode. keep it flowing out of just the one side.)

Set the boost at 13~14 psi. any higher and the stock system runs out of fuel. Even at 14 psi you should be data logging. knock is bad - hmmm kay?

This is also only to be done on a healthy car, or you have even more work to do.

New plugs/wires/coils - get new gaskets when you change your plugs.
Pressure test - This should be done to your turbo 3000 monthly
make sure your BOV isn't leaking
fuel injector cleaner
make sure your running fully synthetic oil at the right level.
check both your turbos to make sure there healthy.

Now if you still want more, or want to make sure he sees your tailights you can hotwire your pump and throw in 450cc fuel injectors. this will require a fuel controller. you'll get more PSI, but it will fall back down to 10ish by redline, so you'll need to be shifting early, or replace your turbos.

I suppose you could substitue water/alcohol injection for 450cc and fuel controller, but I have no experience with that, so I'm going to keep quiet on that one, and just mention it out loud.

Bigger Turbos will make sure that he see's your tail lights. the factory snails are pathetic. I'll leave it at that or I'll start to rant.

Just remember, all he needs is a chip, some headers, and a smaller pulley and he'll be kicking your teeth in again.

Also, street racing is bad, hmmm kay? :P So keep it at the track. Or at least on a paved road.

The only Cobras that were supercharged were 2003 and 2004. These guys are very quick with around 390 hp stock. I wouldn't mess with one of these, but stock Cobras from 2002 and earlier and VR-4's run very close. The VR-4 is a much more refined automobile though. If you read articles on the Cobras, that era Mustang is really put together cheaply and it rides like it.

Yep. I would not race a late model cobra svt with a stock VR4
http://www.detnews.com/2002/autosconsumer/.../g01-555224.htm

With a pair of BR 15g, 550 injectors, SAFC, full 4 inch turbo-back exhaust piping with no cats, ACT 2600, greddy profec set at 21 psi and "precision" shifting, A VR4 can take a svt off the line and never look back :)
