Ok, I just bought a 99 Montero and when I went to use the cd changer it brought up an error message on the head unit: "ER 03". I checked and the changer shuffles thru and checks for discs but does not seem to recofnize that they are there.

The really strange thing is that I bought a changer on Ebay that was tested as working before it was shipped and it displays the same message.

Could this be a problem with the head unit?

Does anyone know what this error message means

Thanks!

Are they burned cd's or regular? If they are normal cd's then you have a problem with the changer.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried burned and unburned. Doesn't matter either way.

The reason I'm wondering if there may be something wrong with the head unit is because i bought another OEM changer on Ebay and it shows the same message as the original changer. It acts the same too. You can watch it go thru and check for the discs but when you tell it to pick a certain disc thru the head unit, it shows the error message.

Any other suggestions??

Thanks

The error code refers to the changer not the radio.

MIITECH,

Do you know what the code means? Is it something that can be fixed or is it better just to chuck the changer?

Thanks again!!

It means the changer cannot read the discs and any electronic repair shop should be able to fix it.

I have just bought a s/h Legnum with the 10cd changer, get the same error code Er-03 with commercial CD's but it comes right after a moment. Have not percivered with burned cd's long enough yet to see if i can get them to work.

Might be I am trying to play the CD to soon before it aquires it.

If I can find it I will put the CD lens cleaner throguh it and see if that helps.

I just recently started getting an error code for my CD changer. Its a pioneer cdx-p1270 12-disc changer connected to the stock unit that come with the 97 Galant ES. I've had the changer for years with no problems. But a week ago my battery died, and ever since I get the error code 14A1. My radio still works, just the changer. When I try to play a disc, it shows this error code, and plays each track on a given disc for about 10 sec, before switching to next track. Does anyone know how to correct this?

ER03 means that the changer cannot read the disc.

to solve the problem go to best buy and buy the cd cleaner for the video game systems and pop it in and listen to the instructions. it may take a few cleanings but it will solve your probelem and the cd player will read the cds again

The cd's need to be loaded upside down in some of the changers. Had the same problem with my 95 3000 - flipped the cd's over..and the problem was solved. Really!

My 2001 Eclipse Spyder 4 disk cd-changer started giving me E 03 as it reached 10,000 miles. It will not eject disks, try to take disks (although is it currently full) and it won't play.

I saw this thread about a week ago as I searched for what the code meant. Since, I have talked to the service writer at the local dealership and he explained it is just a code that indicates they will pull the entire unit and send it off. There could actually be a number of reasons for that particular code.

I also discussed it with a local Stereo Electronics shop who had done some excellent work on my home stereo speakers awhile ago. I was actually referred to them this time by an Auto Concepts Shop (they add aftermarket alarms, spoilers .....) who I also trust and remembered them from the home stereo work they did. They told me exactly what the dealer had. Unfortunately, they also told me the 4 disk cd-changer was something they were unfamiliar with and that they were doing work for local dealers with the 6 disk changers. Howver, they indicated the E 03 code was just used to notify the dealers the changers needed to be removed and sent out for repair.

Thanks to this forum though, I think I have seen an option where with patch cables I can replace the factory unit with an OEM unit. Since the Dealer told me the minimum charge would be $400, I will begin investigating the OEM option.

MITSUBUSHI MONTERO e03 on cd changer on 99 MODEL
EXACT same problem, EXACT same car,
would not play, would not eject... had quit playing while changing from one disc to another.
I pulled the velcro cover off of the changer. Unplugged both cords going into the side of the unit. Waited about 20 seconds and plugged them back in. Went back working just great.

Hope that helps!

I Have exactly the same problem with my 10-disc CD-changer. It is from 1 1998 Montero with Infinity System. It gave me the E 03 erro code. I unplugged, wait and plugged back in the cables at the back end of the changers, it did not work on my system. I can clear see the motor advanceing through the CDs, but... sometime it works and most of time it doesn't work.

Can you shre with me the "patch cable" solution to use other brand's CD changer?

Another questio with te same sound system... since my cd-changer doesn't work, so I tried to get a "CD car cassette Adaptor" and use the cassette player to play music from my portable CD player... but, it doesn't work! I test the same adaptor in my Toyota car, it works perfectly. I know my Infinity system plays regular cassette perfectly... Does anyone know what's the problem and what can I do to get around it?

Thanks for your help...

Bit of an old thread, but if it is any help, I had a similiar problem, I tried a head cleaner but if the changer doesn't read the CD's then this is no use, in the end I managed to get an identical mitsu CD changer (10 disc) off ebay and it works perfectly now. the CD changer cost me about £70, expensive but I suppose compared to the cost of dealer or specialist shop input was worth it.

I do use a head cleaner every now and then on it ( a bit of preventative medicine!)

btw my car is an X reg mitsu Shogun elegance 3.5 d-id

I too have a factory installed 10 cd changer in my 1998 Montero that will not play cds and the same Eo3 error message comes up. The local car stereo repair shop said that if this worsens gradually, it usually means that the laser is bad. I can't use a disc cleaner as it will not read that disc. I will try unhooking as suggested and see if that helps. Any other ideas are welcome.

I've learned the use of my changer causes the/a CD to drop into the bottom of the unit. If I take it apart and remove all CDs including the dropped CD, I can put it back together and insert a single CD into slot 1. Once I do this, I can play and eject the single CD as much as I try. However, as soon as I attempt to change or load additional CDs, it causes the changer to move. This drops the initial CD to the bottom and results in the E03 again until I take it apart and remove the dropped CD. Therefore, I can use the unti as a single disk CD player.
