So I was asking my friend what he thought of the new 2006 Eclipse, and he said he wasn't very fond of the body styling, which is fine, personal taste (no accounting, right?) and all, but then he went on to say that mitsubishi is known for not making very good engines. I assumed he was crazy, because as far as I know, mitsubishi engines have a good reputation. Can anyone shed some light on this? History, experiences, any info's welcome.

i have experience with the 4G64(4cyl) and the 6G72(v6) that come in the 3G. i think they are great engines. the 4cyl is a great block to turbocharge. the stock internals can hold up to 15psi. which is great for a nonturbo engine

OK, have you heard of anyone having trouble with their engine? If so what sort? I'm just trying to get a feel for the overall quality of the engineering. Does anyone else have any experiences to share?

i've heard some issues with the throttle servos with some models. so far, we've owned 4 mitsus (2 lancers, pajero, outlander) already, no major problems.

lb for lb the 6G72 will make more power than the 2JZ engine in the turbo supras.

oh, I can feel the haters crawling out of the wood work for that one...

Some of the 6G72's came with 2 bolt mains, but it's not that horrid. I'm not sure what the new eclipse got. (2 bolt or four bolt, cast or forged crank)

Also the new eclipse has that mitsu version of V-tec doesn't it? That should help a bit. Don't know how fussy that is, but the 6G72 is pretty damn stout.

there are people making 800 hp on stock lower end internals. try that with the stock crank in a chevy 350...

sigh...

I believe that the new eclipses are single overhead cam, though aren't they? That's not exactly going to evoke awe inspiring performance, but it's not meant to. They don't even sell a turbocharged version.

It's not like they're marketing the car as a sports car.

It's a sport compact. a fun, peppy little car to tool around in, while getting good mpg. take it for what it's worth, and the engine will last a good long time.

And this is just the 6g72. I'm not even spouting off about the 4 cylinder in the older eclipses/Evo's. You know, the ones that rally race? where all the components on a car take a beating, not just the engine.

But maybe a better talk could take place if you were to give an engine of his choice, so that we might compare. And then decide which of the two is junk.

I mean it's not like the mitsu engine is perfect for all situations. I wouldn't put one in a BD7 catapillar and try and push a ton of dirt around.

So the new eclipse has a 6G72 in it? I'm new to all this mitsubishi talk, so bear with me. If I wanted to upgrade it, throw in a turbo or supercharger, how much punishment do you think it could take, and do you really think it could take as much as a supra engine?

I thought that I read they were putting in a newer vesion of the 6g72. It's a six cylinder three liter, isn't it? 240 or 260 hp? sure sounds like a 6g72 to me...

Problem with just slapping a turbo charger on this car (aside from the normal problems of turbo charging any NA car) is it's wrong wheel drive. :P

Can it take as much as a supra engine, I don't know. I'm not sure what the crank is, how the mitsu version of V-tec will interact with everything, and a boat load of other variables. (have they improved the oil flow problems that you run into with the 6g72 when your spinning it 8,000 rpm and making above 600 horsepower?)

I'm sure in a few months there will be all sorts of turbo kits out for it. the Eclipse aftermarket has always made me jealuos...

According to mitsubishi's site it's a 3.8-liter MIVEC V6, makes 263 horsepower stock, why does it being front wheel drive affect whether or not you can turbocharge it? I have no knowledge of the other variables you mentioned either, if anyone has some insight, feel free to speak up.

well, then, if it's a 3.8 I'm going to stop preaching about that engine, as I have no experience with it, but the 6g72 and the 4G64 are stout.

but I did see that mitsu is offering a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty with it. Ya wouldn't think they'd do that with a junk motor.

Does anyone know what engine it is in the new eclipse then? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

TTAngel, so have your experiences with mitsubishi engines been positive?

I'm currently making 500+hp on a completely stock mitsu engine with over 100,000 miles on it. I added turbos and fuel. That's it. I drive my car like I stoled it. Once it hits normal temps the engine sees 6,500 rpm before the next gear. When it finally gernades I'll be doing a rebuild and trying to make serious horsepower.

Had a non-turbo DSM that ran like a champ all through college. even put up with my sister's abuse for two years. I changed oil and brakes. that's it. It never let me down.

Guy, your on the mitsu forum. Do you honestly expect someone to jump up and say, "All mitsu makes is crap." C'mon.

Yeah I figured it'd be a little biased, but I also can't ask people who haven't actually owned/drive a mitsubish regularly now can I? As for the engine, I thought the 6G74 was only 3.5L?
