Not to sound like a punk, but gas is getting expensive. Has anyone tried octane booster, and if so how much did they boost the octane?

We've got a gas station up here that sells 76 racing fuel 110 and 114 octane respectively but at a price of 5+ dollars a gallon.

no. not really. Maybe he just got a bad batch of gas, but you do not have to continue to use octane booster.

They turn red from the octane booster. I've also seen orange and grey.

Why do you want to boost your octane? many people seem to have misconceptions about this stuff.

Octane booster alone will not make your car faster.

lets start off with this first. octane booster raises in points. one point = 0.1 of an octane rating. So if your can of octane booster claims a 7 point raise and you have 91 octane in your car it will probably only get to about 91.7, But, you also have to take into acount the fact that the higher octane that you get, the less the booster will "boost".

So with 87 and a 7 point booster you may get 88 octane. 91 you may get 91.7 and with 94 you may only get 94.5 octane.

Now, as to why the octane booster doesn't make your car faster, every engine wants a certain octane. the reason that we have different octanes is that high perfomance motors are also more knock prone. Octane fights knock. It lets the gas burn slower. To much, and you will not make your maximum power(your gas actually burns to slowly). to little, and you will knock.

For the average car 89 is fine. for some high compression/high performance cars 89 will make the motor knock. So you need more.

Some of the octane brands may give you up to a 2 point raise, but all it will really do is help fight knock in a high perfomance engine. you have to already be fast to take advantage of what the octane booster is offering.

So, I repeat, why do you want to raise you octane? Is it because you have a high compression engine, and want to get by running 87 octane? cause it's about the same amount to buy a 7 dollar bottle as it is to put an extra 7 dollars into 93~94 octane.

Or just run the mid grade, or the low grade, but don't get on the gas as hard. you will be able to run the engine, just at reduced performance levels.

anywho, that's my long winded two cents.

****...TTAngel covered it ALL. As far as race gas goes, if you don't have a car that can handle over 91 octane don't use it. Say you have a normal Honda Civic or something like that. If you continually use too high of an octane, your injectors could slowly become clogged over time because your combustion chamber cannot produce a high enough temperature to completely burn the fuel.

Second...about the above quote...I notice you live in Louisiana. How much do you pay for a gallon? Around here (near Chicago) we pay about $2.45 a gallon for regular unleaded. That's expensive, and we are one of the nation's highest priced markets, on average.
