Hi
I have both of these vehicles and have spent a lot of time working on them, particularly the 1984. It has a 2.6 astron, hi lift kit, long range fuel tank, snorkel (not currently fitted because of auxillary tank) rear wheel carrier, alloy bullbar, overhead console (aluminium), etc. All of these I have done myself and can help if needed.

G'day RevL300,

How you doin mate?

Was wondering if you knew the details on putting an Astron 2600 in a 94 L300 Express (SJ Model) Auto 2wd?

Specifically, I'm after the full run down,

which engine to source, which year, how much it should cost,
what to look for,
what changes are required
can I keep my existing lpg setup
can I keep my existing auto?
do I need new wiring loom or ecu?
What modifications will be required, is it an easy job for a mechanic?

Hoping someone either has the answer, or knows someone who does.

Thanks and Regards,

SXTACY

cheers

Hi there, Nice looking L300 you have
I am not a modifier, just trying to keep my old workhorse going, 84 L300 SC
Have you had fuel delivery problems with the original engine? My van stops randomly now and it is fuel starvation, probably caused by too much fuel bypassing the carby inline and flowing back to the tank, as I have replaced the fuel tank, filter, flexible hoselines, fuel pump and carby overhaul that is all that is left. I tried blocking off the return fuel line but that seemed to stress that fitting on the carby thats in the return fuel line, making it leak fuel. Any ideas ?

I think you might have to look inside the carby. what condition is the needle and seat in? Is it sticking? To check this you will need to crank it over, then turn it off and remove the top of the carby (being careful to not break the gaskets). If there is plenty of fuel, check for blocked jets (see below). If no fuel, then check needle and seat (remove float). Rubber tipped needles can stick. Try removing the air horn off the top of the carby and chocking it with you hand when its running (is it running?) If so open the throttle full and chocking it till it nearly stops then remove your hand. It will run rich but clear itself. Do this a couple of times to suck any dirt out of the jets. Try these and let me know what you find.

Thanks very much for your reply and I have previously replaced the needle and seat and cleaned the carby. When the carb gets fuel it runs well and then the opposite happens....The locals tell me not to buy fuel from the area I live in because shysters mix all types of thinners into the petrol. I have experienced one petrol filter where there was a glug of gunk in the line, but since changing that filter I have not seen that again. It seems that some fuels must irritate the fuel pump - either its diaphram action or the valves themselves and it just does not pump until that whatever clears back to normal fuel. Sounds crazy I know. At an earlier time when I was pretty sure that I had contaminated petrol, I drained the tank, and then pumped it all back in via the fuel line to the engine, like a backflow, and the Van ran like a dream for a week with no random stopping, then I thought maybe the tank gauze was clogged and a good backflush might help, now I think that it was the mixing action that would have happened with that operation that did the trick. Since this last major stop (two days off work) I have replaced all the primary flexible fuel lines from the tank to the Carby, but did not find any obvious flaking inside the old lines that might act like a flap valve. I am going to buy only certified petrol from servos well away from this area, from now on and see how it goes. Wheew! long fingered one. Ah can you tell me whether the fuel return lines to the tank are capable of bypassing the full output of the fuel pump, or could there ever be a situation when that might happen?

Sounds like you have petrol with ethanol in it. Ethanol has been said to dissolve o rings and diaphrams etc. The return line will allow all the fuel to return eventually as it is smaller in diameter and has a resticter in it. It should not give you problems. Try removing your fuel pump from the head and connecting all the hoses. Pump it manually and see what happens. If the pressure becomes too high (restricted), the pump will coast. You are in oz, what state? Where do you buy your fuel?
