QUOTE(TTAngel @ Aug 31 2005, 05:26 PM)
engine swap from a SOHC is harder than from a DOHC, because they share less sensors, but both have been done.

Yes it is possible.  may be easier to just buy the manifolds/turbos/injectors/injector resistor pack off a TT and then add a fuel controller, and what not though, then just run less boost at 10:1 compression.
*

I'm also interested in swapping in a TT, but in my 02 Galant. Would using a NA V6 and TT parts warrant an easier swap and/or more reliable performance as well?

Okay, so after reading this thread several times, I think I've kinda figured out what to look for, but I might be looking at a vr4 (early model) in the near future, so I want to be sure.
1. Differential, make sure the recall work has been done, check for fluid etc.
2. Test drive, shift hard, listed for turbo spooling properly, be very careful for smoke
3. Check turbo play (some specifics on what to look for would be nice)
4. Make sure most recent 60k work was done properly (if anyone could give a complete idea of what to look for it would help), especially timing belt
5. Check oil cap for cleanliness
Anything else major I should be aware of? I know the clutch can be a weak point if its abused, and a bad timing belt can do some serious damage. And that the transfer case can be extremely dangerous, so make sure its been done, but also that the recall covers the transfer case for the life of the car, including multiple replacements. Obviously, I will be checking for everything in general, just making sure I check any typical abuse or problem areas...

Spin the compressor wheel on the turbo it should spin freely and not move side to side or in and out.

to be honost with you i would go for the vr-4 if your willing to take the time to work on it as well as the commitment these cars need alot of attention an that is no lie!! if you are going to go with the vr-4, the first things you would need to do would be full tune up!! cause alot of people dont know how to maintain these cars so you have to make up for their mistakes!! also another thing is the rear turbo will most likley need to be replaced but if your going to do that might as well upgrade ipsmotorsports.net sales a really good EVOIII kit for about 3600 after all the bells an whistles an then labor is about 1500 to do it if they charge you more then 1600 dont do it their fucking you over!! also if your car is starting to blow blue smoke dont be alarmed its that rear turbo!! but yes you do need to be mechanicaly inclined cause if not your going to need take out loans to fix these cars lol hypothetically speaking well to a point... lol if you want a air conditioner in your car your most likley going to have to get it refilled depending on the year.. depending on what you want in power an style i would do alot research i have a 92 cause their in my opinion the better gen... the worlds fastest 3k is actually a 92 =)!!but to be honost with you if your not willing to dedicate alot of your time to these cars dont bother cause it wont get you no where but to dead ends that will cost a grip to fix!!! if you have any questions just email me at pfluegerfishing@msn.com or just write me on the forum..

your not going to lose to NO S2K if you have the VR-4 I can promise you that!! people think since we weigh alot we are slow but uhhum.. i beg to differ!! in our generation of the 3k it was actually the fastest car in production out of japan towards our street cars it was faster then the GTR and even the TT Supra!! dont believe me do the research.. oh yea if you think corvette's are fast you'll think a 3k is fast i beat the new years and i have little mods no internals and no turbo upgrades!!

Read the entire post before you ever call me out again on anything I say.

First, a non turbo 3/S will lose to a S2000.

Second, yes the rear turbo tends to die before the front one and yes you should replace both.

Third, while I do like IPS and Jeff is the freaking man but 3250 you get turbo, manifolds, 02 housings, oil lines, and gaskets... Ok so now you need fuel pump injectors, Wideband. Emanage, hmm want the rest of the parts you need. hmm so now you just doubled that.

Forth, the fastest 3/S is a 93, and its Matt and Dynamic Racing's car.

Fifth, His time 8.81 @ 166.7mph

Sixth,The Proof

(IMG:http://www.dynamicracing.com/mw/images/0/03/DR_8_second_pass.jpg)

Seventh, The '92's are just as bad as the '91's because they only have a 2 bolt main which make them weak.

Eighth, just a testimate to the strength of the stock axles... yeah the 8 second run was done on them.

Ninth, oh yeah and no two step, stock "Y" pipe

Next, My AC works just fine.

And finally, would you like me to continue to prove everything you say as worthless or will you just take my word for it and accept that the supra was faster then the 3/S?

~Eric

not to disagree with you, but the date on that is kinda important... before 94, the 3000gt vr4 was slower, the stock psi was lower, hence the slower 0-60, 1/4, and top speed, in 94, they upped the stock to make it equivalent to the supra TT, so not really disagreeing, cause the other guy sounded like an ***** anyway, just pointing out that the date, 1993, is kinda important, cause the vr4 in later years could hang with the supra TT, and so could the earlier models after the free boost upgrade (Boost mod) that upped them to the equivalent of the later years. Not disagreeing, stock for stock in 93 it wasn't faster, it was def slower, but in later years it was the equal of the supra TT for speed. And definetly not to take away from the other cars listed... I'd take any one of them any day, specially the supra TT targa or the 3000gt vr4, but the others would be cool also...
Oh, and about that comment about the 91-92, does that mean they should be avoided? Turns out I won't be in the market as soon as I thought, but hopefully it won't be long, and thats helpful info...
oh, and another sidebar... I would love to see where the R34 gtr v-spec 2 matches up with them... it was a later year, but that car is supposed to be sick on the skidpad, although stock its not faster I don't think...

20 HP doesn't do jack.

Unless you really plan getting the power up there is nothing wrong with the 2 bolts.

i dont agree with the above stats for the vr4,
i know for a fact mine can go alot faster than 150mph/240kph

3rd gear goes to 113mph/180kph and thats with 2 more gears to go!

easily get the car lighter and faster to get it up too 280kph+

tho i spose those above stats are perfectly stock ones that couldnt get the full use of the gear ratios

3rd wouldn't go that high if you had the stock 17" wheels.

I bought this vr4 as a daily driver because I am having my 93 RX7 rebuilt. I went out to find a sporty car and I found this 3000GT and I must say I got a great deal on it only paid $6000. This is just a base so it is front wheel drive (my first sports car with front wheel drive). 0 to 60 is good and the handling is OK. This car is very heavy, about 3300 pounds and only 222 horsepower.
