I just got the car(3000gtSL) 2 weeks ago and its been running great ever since i got the exhaust leak fixed and the crankshaft pulley fixed but all the sudden im having some problems. i woke up this morning and drove to my brothers soccer game, the car ran perfect. after the soccer game i turn the car on and its running really slow. it feels like its not shifting ( its an automatic btw) and i dont know why. it feels like its starting off in a really low gear and it never leaves from tht gear. the check engine light didnt come on for a while so i drove it to the store. On the way back the check engine light came on. Im not too worried about this because it happend once a few days ago but i let it sit without driving it for like 4 hours and then it just started fine and drove normally. the check engine light used to come on all the time but after i took it into the shop to get other things fixed(got the car completely looked over and they said their was nothing else wrong with it accept it will need to belts and other minor things in the future), it didint come on. And i figured out that it was only coming on because of the battery cables are loose. Im sure if i let my car sit it will run normally again but im just really worried that this keeps happening. anyone have any ideas on whats wrong with my car?

okay so apprently my transmission is in failsafe mode, i remember reading in here somewhere that somone else had the same problem, but again, like them, i cant figure out how to get it out of failsafe mode. i took to it to a transmission shop and the idiots their said that my computer doesnt communicate with theirs, is anyone else having this problem on a 3000gt? i ended up taking it to a auto diognostics place. ...so aggravating.

You need to take it somewhere that can read trans dtc's.

alright i took it into an auto diagnostics place and they got my computer talkin to theirs but still couldnt get any codes out of it.. they concluded that i need a new transmission. they said its stuck in 3rd and a bunch of other lame crap. my car ran great last week, wasnt slipping or anything so i took it to another place for another opinion. i read somewhere that the tcm can cause the transmission to do this so i guess i need a new one. a transmission wouldnt just go out like that right? it would have to be a progressive thing as far as i know so im not buying the " needs a new transmission " crap.

Hi

We believe our car is stuck in 2nd gear but it's really hard to tell.

I see you have several posts on this and you found out the trans is in fail safe mode.

I am having the same trouble finding a TCM for cheap on eBay but according to my factory manual for another mitsubishi, the TCM is the last thing to test for becuase other gizmos can put the trans in safe mode.

I was able to finaly find a factory manual on eBay for our 92 Summit that has this problem.

What I did though was use the 94 Galant manual to assist with some ideas and trouble shoot the problem.

The galant manual says that if the trans is stuck in 3rd gear, there can be problems internally with the tranny... sensors or something like that.

For stuck in 2nd gear there is three - four possible problems to check and none of them are internal to the trans. Most likely problem according to the manual is the park neutral switch or overdrive switch.

The first thing you test is the Park Neutral switch. This is where I got stuck becuase the connector pins did not match. So I await shipment of the right manual for the car.

The second thing to test is the Overdrive switch.

Third is harness to ignition switch

Last is TCM but the diagnostic chart can isolate the problem to the TCM before the other tests go to the next test. Meaning, you end up at the TCM via the Yes/No type answers.

If you still have the problem, I suggest a factory manual so you can test for other problems that cause the tranny to go into fail safe mode.

BTW.. a friend told me he had a Dodge Caravan that did this and after ripping all his hair out on the problem, it turned out to be a speed sensor switch that was causing the problem.

PM me for it. ill keep u updated on how this new TCM works, thanks

you may want to see what check engine light is. dealer or buy a logger. probably not a bad idea to get a logger if you plan on keeping the car.
