Hello & Help!

I just replaced the battery on my 2000 Galant and my radio needs a code! I have the VIN number, but not the serial number from the radio. I'm not the original owner of this car and do not have an owners manual to try and figure out where to find the serial number or know what the code is. Can anyone explain this to me. Am I the only one feeling like this code thing is a rip off(?) since contacting a dealership they want money to ive the code?
