I have purchased a 1997 Mitsubishi Delica with a 3.0 litre V6 engine (6g72) this engine is the 24 valve variant that has 137 kw. My question is are these engines able to be converted to run on LPG. Many workshops say no but the Triton and Challenger share the same engine and can be converted. Some have said that the imported engines MAY melt down. ie valve seat recession and piston failure due to the fact that it is running on gas (lpg). Are the imported engines any different to the engines sold in Australia or anywhere else?

Your best bet is to talk to a) the better gas fitters in your area, ie. Parnells in Vic. b)reliable engine reconditioners in your area about modifying the heads to suit gas (hardened valve seat inserts) but being an unleaded engine to start with, it probably should already have these. You will only have problems with gas if it is not tuned to suit, (running too lean). Ask the professionals and always get a 2nd opinion.

I spoke with a mechanic at a gas fitters workshop, he said that they could fit a system but they will not be responsible if anything happens to the engine. A rebuild will cost arround A$5ooo . Also spoke with a technition at a Mitsubishi dealership he said that all engines (6g72) series have to have the prefix S4 incorporated into the engine number to be lpg compliant, as far as I know this only applies to Australian delivered cars. This vehicle is imported and all I need to know is can it be fitted with a lpg system. Visually this engine looks exactly like a V6 out of a Triton or Challenger.

cheers
