you take off by:
1) Disengage the clutch
2) Make sure your engine is running, if so skip to step 4
3) Start your engine
4) Use the shifter's handle to move the shifter into 1st gear
5) Slowly release pressure on the clutch pedal while smoothly applying pressure to the accelerator pedal
6) Allow clutch to completely engage

you should shift on the street and/or a driveway or parking lot... those are usually the best places.. a race track also serves as a fine place for shifting

it will take you sometime to get the taking off down. i stalled my car 7 times in my driveway the first time i learned to drive a stick.

BTW, what does this have to do with racing?(posting in a racing forum)

Even if your positive about shifting save up for a new clutch. Someone that i know has burned the clutch out in her van at least 4 times and remember, she is POSITIVE that she knows how to drive a stick

I had to learn by hopping in cars and having people teach me. It's almost impossible to have someone talk you through it without being in the car with them doing what they say...even then it takes judgement and know-how to know when to do all the steps. It becomes second-nature; however, and you will be glad you learned.

I learned when i was 16 in my dads civic, just brought it to a huge parking lot and messed around with it until i was confident to take it in traffic, then took it from there. Im so used to it now when I drive a friends car with an auto im still reaching down to shift

Yeah, it's called bored left foot syndrome, or BLFS for short.

I know the feeling, after driving all the cars I do at work, I get into my car and push into the plastic where the clutch pedal WOULD be.
