Hey just wanted to know if anyone elses endeavor does this...

When i first start it up for about the first 15 minutes usually or until unless car was recently driven...whenever i turn the steering wheel either way it makes a kind loud like creeking sound....but it eventually goes away after driving for alittle...
Anyone have any ideas?

Do you notice any changes in steering, shuddering of the wheel, etc? It could be powersteering related if the noise persists while the wheel is maxed out, or just creeky bushings on the control arms / steering assy.

the noise is only when the steering wheel moves from one side to another.....if i max the wheel out and hold it there no noise at all....just when it is moving from side to side.....

maybe bushings or something like you said....

Yeah sounds like bushings, since the weather has started to get cold here in Germany I have noticed some squeeking / kreeking when I turn the wheel, I investigated it having a buddy turn the wheel and tracked it down to the bushings on the control arm. Some graphite powder should clear up the problem if you that concerned with it.

You should be able to get it at any local auto store, shucks, kragen, pep boys, auto zone, etc. If they don't have that exactly explain to them you just need a lubricant for your bushings and they should get you a comperable product.

Just max out your steering and take a look at your control arms (both sides) you get up in there with a hose and blast all the grime off, you should see bushings where the arms mount to the frame upper and lower, wait unitl its all dry and apply the stuff to all points where the bushing contacts metal. Let me know if you have any problems.

H'MMM not sure I would call it creeking, however after about 25000 miles when turning the wheel I would get a popping sound that gradually got worse until the whole dash board would jump. It felt like it was coming from just below the steering wheel, however the shop could not find anything wrong. First try was new steering column...did not work...then new rack and pinion and the problem went away, however lately since the weather has turned cold in Pennsylvania it is starting to act up again. The first time I was told nothing was there, however it gradually got worse and I am afraid it is going to get worse again? Any ideas or does this sound like the same problem that the graphite would help?

yep...sounds the same...over time it will gradually get worse until while turning the car on long turns the entire dash board will like jump!
It feels to me like a universal joint getting stuck, however they told me nothing when I ask and I am not sure that replacing the steering column would not replace the universal joints?

I just put my first new tires on the car and while having the 4 wheel allignment I was talking to the technician and he told me that there are at least 3 universal joints on the steering and there were not all the normal adjustments for allignment, however he was able to get it alligned.

I am about to call my service department and see if graphite or lubricants on those joints will help before it gets as bad as last year.

frustrating

did you try the graphite powder? if it turns into a clicking/popping noise it could be the CV joints or the front differential. Changing a whole rack and pinion is alittle excessive unless its covered by warranty then by all means go for it.

Yep the rack was changed under warranty. Tomorrow it is being checked again since it is getting worse quicker than last year so I wrote down the information you gave me and will pass it along to the tech tomorrow and will keep you posted.

Thanks
Don

to bring you up to date...had the front end steering rack and all tightened and torqued...lubricated and checked and it seemed to help. I am not sure that driving in the crappy PA roads, getting dirt etc on the front linkages, then when the weather turns cold the steering starts to jump, or pop or stick...not sure what, however this latest service on the front steering seems to help.
We are headed to the Sugar Bowl in Atlanta GA Friday so I will see how it steers on the trip.

PS upgraded the headlights thanks to this site so I wanted to say thank you for all the info posted here

Thats cool, I am paying close attention to my drive train as the salt they use on the roads hear takes quite a toll on any exposed surface.
