Hi,

A friend of mine has recently bought an RVR - non-turbo, but not completely sure if it's a 1.8 or 2.0 litre version (I do know that it's not the later GDI engine). She was complaining today that it seems to be pretty heavy on the gas - 130km of round town running used best part of about 20 litres of gas apparently!

Changing plugs and filters are two tasks for the weekend - as will be running a bottle of injector cleaner through the system.

My questions for anyone out there are:
- what are typical "real world" gas consumption figures for a 1.8 or 2 l RVR (open road at 100km/h or 60 miles/hr)?
- any suggestions for other possible causes of the high consumption?

Thanks for your help,
Craig

I have a 92 2.0l with full time 4wd (don't know if all RVRs are FT 4WD) and I have been getting about 350km on a tank (about 40l) so what's that? about 11l/100km - that's city. On the highway (not that there are any in NZ!) I might get close to 400km on a tank. I have just replaced the spark plugs and admittedly I have had a faulty thermostat for some time which I will also be replacing in the next few days and so I expect these numbers to improve. Hope this gives some idea for comparison. I'd like to hear from others if their mileage is as crappy as mine. I used to drive a 93 Ford Explorer with a 4.0l V6 and it got similar mileage!

Hi,

I've got a '93 2l Diesil non turbo, which I'm currently averaging around 400-450km around town on a tank.

I've yet to test it on the open road between Palmy Nth and Auckland but I'll post some consumption stats once I do.

Regards
CJ

I've got a 1995 Turbo Sports gear RVR - 2.0l.

It honks through the gas. I have been running a spreadsheet on this for about 3 months to work out my average fuel consumption and it turns out I am doing around 11.5 l/100Km. The worst fuel efficiency i've experienced is 13.5l/100km around town.
I seem to be forever filling this beast up.
It's still a hell of a lot of fun to drive, though...

I have a 93 rvr 20L 4WD 5 sp manual of which Im averaging 450 to 485 km per fill up and this is on 47 Lt & 49 Lt onthe last two fill ups, and and this is all town running.
I concider this to be very good, Much beter than my last car , a 93 skyline 2.5 auto which averaged 350 to 400 km town running on 55 Lt fill ups. ( Piity about the 96 fuel though)
Im hoping to get 100 km more on long trips fromthe RVR.
Regards, Doug.

My 98 RVR AWD Turbo gets around 14L/100k around town.
It is thirsty but I tend to enjoy the acceleration, ---because I can.
Upping the boost to 18 PSI seemed to help the mileage a little?
The tyre pressures had a large impact on mpg.
The performance is better than a lot of sixes and some V8's so I guess the consumption is the price we pay.

MC

What do you recon is the best tyre pressure to have on RVR to increase MPG?
i currently get 13.5L/100km on mine and i was looking on ways to improve it.

I don't have a manual so I guesstimated 35 PSI. It was running low 30s before.
I just finished a trip mostly at 110 KPH and I got 15L/100K.
This is not good and I suspect I have a faulty thermostat or O2 sensor problem.
The tailpipe is quite sooty, time for a dynotune I think. :(

Thanks Macole,
I currently use 28PSI and that seems to be ok and gives me 13.5L /100km
i tried 35PSI once and that is the upper limit indicated on a tyre so its not that safe as well as the ride gets bumpy at times.
So i had to reduce it to the current 28PSI.

Does this mean that your RVR runs on 96 octane fuel. :o

I have a 2000 Super Exceed GDI (1.8), am I supposed to be running on 91 or 96? Just bought it at auction, sweet car, but empty tank on purchase. I filled up with 91 out of habit. Should I be looking at the higher octane?

Also spitting a bit of black stuff out of exhaust, several people have said that's pretty common with new imports, they get stored for months and driven short distances and the tank is emptied before export.

The MMC says I'm doing average 12 km per litre around town, (34 mpg imperial, 29 mgp US) which will be fine by me. I forgot to hit the trip meter on the first fill :-(. I'll update next fill.

The RVR GDI's take 96 octane. The issue is with the amount of sulphur in the petrol but this is improving all the time in NZ and we're getting closer to the Japanese standards. The engines are geared up for the higher octane too. I put 91 octane in before I realised and the 96 is a much smoother ride. My model is the 1.8, so that would make a difference to the 2.4 models quoted here. I also have a light foot on the gas!

My fill was 30 ltrs and I do seem to be getting about 12 km/l, or 8.3 lts/100 km, but early days yet, I'm going to run a log book for a while. I've got it going in for a service, cambelts and the works, the air filter needs replacing too so I'm hopeful of getting closer to the 7.1l/100km (14km/ltr) that is quoted at http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/15691/. Just as well the cambelts are a 100k job, I've been quoted $800 for the belts and full 100k service. OUCH. Still once it's done and fully checked it'll probably be 6-8 months till the next service.
