i'm not sure if this would be the right forum to ask this question. here goes:

would it be possible to at least pause the odometer of...

...digital ones?
...mechanical ones?

if so, how? thanks in advance.

i know you could do odometer reset buti don't wanna go that route. hehehehehe. no, this is not to fool any buyers or anything. just a theoretical question.

I had a dodge ram that was able to do that. I was messing around with the fuses and one that I took out would cut the power to the dash and the headlights. It would stop the odometer but the speedometer would not work also. They have fixed that little slip in the past years.

Mechanical odometers it was easy, just unhook the linkage. The problem with computer-controlled odometers is they go through your wheel speed sensors and those now are hooked up to your ECU. Sure, you can disconnect your odometer, but once you plug it back in, your ECU knows your mileage and will update the odometer.

While we are on the subject, I have a 98 Montero Sport that i recently wrecked. I did all the repair work to the front end and everything looks and runs great. Had the front tires aligned by a local shop and the odometer jumped from 77,xxx miles to 97,xxx miles. What happened? I am already taking a hit in resale value, and the odometer reading sure wont help. Is there anything that my local dealer can do to check the correct mileage. Not looking to screw anyone. Just want to make sure its accurate.

you may be able to apply for an "exempt odometer reading" status, but I'm not sure if you want that either...

That's not nice you don't know why he wants to do it you guys are jumping the gun
he might wanna screw over the DMV!!!
In that case it's different I don't like very many laws as most of em are just revenue generators that screw over the people:)

Me myself I can't wait till I hit 75,000 then all I gotta do is worry about the tail pipe test...errrr I think I keep checking to make sure because I can add a power booster turbo SuperCharger etc and keep my hood closed :)
