Hi all, new to this so could be interesting, I have an fto gr which I love although since i had my stero taken out the other week to have my dash re painted ive noticed a squeek under the bonnet!!!!! it kinda sounded like a fan belt or sommin but now its got worse

you start the car and it sounds a little like a transit van and then it squeeks big style although if you put your foot down a bit it kinda stops any ideas????

also ive just read on the net that if you put your foot down and it takes a while for kick down and then goes you may need a gear box rebuild???

Im a girl and blond so any answers in plain english lol :liebe011:

Hi,

The reason your engine sounds a bit 'clackety' (if that's a word?) when you start it from cold is that it's got hydraulic tappets i.e they work on oil pressure. The GR tappets are self adjusting so the tapping should go away after a couple of mins. If it doesn't then you just need an oil change. It's very common and it will come back after a couple of months. (think yourself lucky, if you had a GPX then the tappets have to be adjusted manualy by taking the engine appart!)

The squeeky noise is a bit harder to diagnose. But from the description it sounds like a slipping 'fan' belt (there isn't a fan belt it's actually a belt that runs the alternator), when the garage change the oil get them to change the alternator belt. If this doesn't solve the squek then try the following (or try them anyway);

Easiest thing to try is to run the air conditioning (assuming you have it) for 1/2 hour or so. Mine squeeks if I don't run the air con regularly. This is because the air con pump is self lubricating and needs regular running to keep it healthy (also regular running of air con is generaly a good thing to keep the whole system healthy, in winter try and do it for ~15mins every couple of weeks, although this is hard to do on cold days because the air con won't activate below ~5 to 7 deg C, the little light comes on but the pump doesn't run).

The next easiest thing is to spray some WD40 on the tensioner pully for the power steering/aircon belt. This is the pulley at the front of the engine that has nothing attached to it. Spray onto the bearing in the centre of the pully but be careful not to get any one the belt.

As for the auto gearbox I don't have any experience of these because I've got a manual. It might not be all that bad, and could just need the gearbox oil changing, so get that done at the same time as the engine oil, it's cheaper than stripping the gearbox for no reason.

Hope this helps,

Ade

Unfortunately there aren't many FTO owners use this forum, as you've probably noticed. I joined a couple of weeks ago and you're the only other FTO owner to post. Also some of the users on this forum aren't too friendly (basically if you haven't got an Eclipse they don't want to know) so I've haven't been visiting as often.

I recommend that you check out the uk FTO owners club (only £10 to join, but you can browse their Forum for free) it's a mine of info and they're very friendly. I'm a member (Ade_gpx on there).

:excl: :(
Im shocked!not friendly!!!! :(
Its just casue the majority are Americans who are all jealous they dont get the FTO in The U.S :),and as for the few posts in Fto section, thats prob more to do with the fact the Fto has a few very good dedicated sites so people dont need to visit elsewhere for info.
And if you do think anyone is flaming you for no reason tell one of the mods team and theyll go round and kick the sh** out of them.

gevo, noi,

I didn't mean that everyone on here is evil  , I just meant that the forum seems to have a clique (i.e. Eclipse owners) and even within that clique there seems to be another clique (i.e. turbo vs na). Indeed some of the users have been nice and friendly (such as yourself and even a couple of eclipse owners). In hindesight perhaps I've interpreted a couple of the posts in the wrong way (cultural differences and all that).

Anyway I'll get me coat, :whistling:
