I just had a new engine dropped into my 94 3kGT. It's not finished yet, as i need to replace the gasket between the exhaust manifold and downpipe. As of now, that is still disconnected. I tried starting it, but i can only get it to crank over but it doesn't catch. While it's cranking over, baseball sized fireballs come out of the manifold. All cylinders have spark and compression, and i assume fuel since ot creates fireballs. My question is does the engine need the back pressure of the cat to work properly or is my car just being a pyro?

sounds like some timing is off, either spark, fuel, or valve, check to see that you have compression on all cylinders, and do a spark timing check and do a visual check on the timing belt to see if they are all ligned up correctly, I have started many cars with no headers  and they do run, sounds obnoxiously loud and annoying, but it should start......

or the cams are in the wrong spot.

or the plug wires are mixed up and going to the wrong cylinders.
