I just bought a 2nd hand GDI 2.4 space wagon. I thought the idling was erratic and the fuel consumption extremely low at only 24.7 mpg. Plus it is burning a bit of fuel and there is carbon from the exhaust.

Mechanic says that the cylinder heads cake up with carbon and this is a common fault on this car.

Is this right? The cost to fix is 6 hours labour at mitsubishi as they have to use special machinery to clean jets and cylinder heads? Is this right?

Anyone else have similar problem?

Did using the premium unleaded fuel and some additive help? :offtopic:

GDI engines need high octane clean fuel or else you will have problems like you describe. Some other contributing factors can be failed sensors, faulty ECU, dirty injectors, faulty plugs, dirty oil, driving style, etc, etc. Good idea to get the ECU read during your clean-out to see if it has any fault codes on it. I would think that in this day and age any garage would do that anyway.

Thanks, yes it does have a faulty cam shaft sensor which is being replaced this week, which contributes to the EMU warning light coming on and off. Does the coking up of the engine cylinder heads and the costs to clean/grind/wotevea sound feasible?

What should the fuel consumption be on a 80,000 mile engine?

mine was sort of idling irractic and use to rev quite high on slightest touch of throttle.i adjusted elctronic bits where throttel cable meets hi tech under bonnet.did not use mutimeter as dont know actual calibrations of the two units.adjusted them until engine sounded alright and ran alright, just trial and error.remeber to adjust with ignition off or warning light lights up.not perfect for me but running lot better.wish i knew exact technical adjustment.

My Diamante v6 GDI 97 is down right now from a similar sounding problem. What did you do tho the electronics to adjust them? Any specifics? I am not a mechanic but a "do-it-yourselfer".

Any help would be greatly appreciated...spent too much on this car already.
