Space Star gear Knob Removal

Hi This sounds crazy but I can't seem to get the gear knob off I have a 2003 1.6
the lift mechanism for the reverse gear seems to stick in the gear knob and has to be
forced to the return position I can only think that the spring in the top of the gear stick has failed or dislodged in some manner
but until I remove the gear knob I cant tell looking at the manual the gear stick shaft appears to be threaded but I don't want to force it
unless I'm sure it is a screw fit
any help welcome

Hmm .. donīt know about your car.

On mine (replaceing clutch disc etc.) I had to remove the belowos on stick - remove the console -
and then I had access to the screws (moving carpet away) holding the stick to transmission.
