hi everyone.
i'm new here and was hoping someone could help me with this.
i just recently purchased a 1988 conquest.
the lever on the underside of the steering column that allows for height adjustment for the column comes loose.
i was told that to fix this i had to install a new column.
there has to be an easier fix for this.
any ideas would be appreciated.

Hopefully you've fixed this by now, but since this is a common problem, let me provide the free and easy fix. While this may seem too easy to believe, it is true and if you try it, you'll find how easy it is. The only thing that keeps the tilt mechanism in the locked position is its shaft binding on the housing it passes through. Over time, (or as I did, saw that it was slightly bent and straightened it) the shaft looses its bend and passes easily back and forth through it. Just pull the shaft out to disengage the tilt and bend the shaft slightly. I don't recall to which side they were originally bent, but you may be able to determine this by looking at it carefully before bending it. Go slowly and you'll begin to see how it stays engaged after you have enough bow in the shaft. -Lots cheaper than a new steering column, which will have the same problem!. 'Hope you still have your car and have improved it considerably by now. -Tom
